The Hay Barn dates from 1870 and is located just outside the picturesque village of Alstonefield, within the beautiful Peak District National Park and provides a peaceful country retreat enabling walking and cycling from the doorstep.

The property is tastefully furnished to provide every home comfort and the sitting room has an open log fire to toast your weary feet by after a long day exploring !

The kitchen/dining area is well equipped and the bedrooms consist of 1 double and 1 twin, with the bathroom benefiting from a large walk-in shower.

The peaceful location with private garden enjoying views of the hills beyond is perfectly situated being only 8 miles north of the Georgian town of Ashbourne, yet within walking distance of Dovedale.

Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and the pretty town of Bakewell are but a short drive away.

There are 2 pubs within walking distance and several more just a short drive away.

We pride ourselves on offering a warm welcome along with local knowledge of the area for first time visitors.

Getting around

We recommend a car for getting here, and especially if you want to see more of The Peak District, however if you simply want to relax, then stock up with food and you needn't drive again all week !!

We are happy to tell you where to go locally, be it quiet walks, places to eat, historical interests and so much more. Please feel free to email to ask any questions you may have. We accept well behaved dogs ( max 2 ) but ask that they sleep in the kitchen only please. A small charge is made of £5 per night, payable on arrival.

House rules

We allow well behaved pets ( max of 2) however we ask that they sleep in the kitchen and are kept out of the bedrooms please.
A small charge is made for their stay, payable on arrival. Five pounds per night.

We only supply the initial supply of wood and coal for the open fire.

What a beautiful barn and lovely conversion. It suited the three of us perfectly. Spent two days walking straight from the house each of those days were wonderful. Hoping to make it back another time.

Peaceful location and really pretty views. Helpful owner, who advised about walks etc. Can recommend the Milldale to Ilam (via Dovedale stepping stones) walk - approx. 3 hours there and back) with an appreciated tea shop at Ilam Park. Property is within an easy car drive to Ashbourne, Buxton and some other villages with amenities.

We had a really lovely week at the hay barn. The owners were very friendly and helpful and the cottage had all we needed. The location was super with plenty of walks on the doorstep. We ate at the pub in the village which was expensive but we had a very good meal. We would recommend the hay barn and hope to return next year

We have just enjoyed a lovely four day break in this holiday cottage. The owners are very welcoming and helpful and there are some lovely places to visit in the area. The cottage is well furnished and the bedrooms spacious with extremely comfortable beds. Plenty of outdoors space and our doggies were made very welcome too. They especially enjoyed meeting Blackie the rescue Shetland Pony who lives very comfortably just across from the barn in his stable where classical music is played at nights to keep him comfy.

It was my first weekend off for over a year and i really wanted to make the most of it. We were let down on another property late on but we continued the search and fell right on our feet. From start to finish The owner was very helpful. I felt relaxed with the booking and the property was everything we were looking for. The views and walks are stunning. We had so many options and took advantage of them all. I strongly recommend staying here and I will always check availability for any spare weekends in the near future. Thanks for having us Coralie. We were very comfortable at The Hay Barn. The owners were very helpful and gave us lots of ideas for places to visit ( there were lots ) and where best to eat . There was also a really useful file giving information on places of interest and even a map of the area. Derbyshire is a beautiful county and The Hay Barn is well located for a visitor to make the most of its attractions. We had a lovely visit and hopefully will return in the future.
