Villa Alexis is a traditional stone Greek house over 100 years old at the edge of The Old Village or Chora. It is a charming old property furnished with antiques and traditional furnishings. The house is reached through an enclosed courtyard leading to a small living room with a kitchen and shower room leading off this room. Upstairs is the bedroom with twin beds and this leads straight onto a roof terrace with stunning sea views and a view of the village to your left. The roof terrace is furnished with table and chairs and stone benches. Geraniums proliferate in pots on the roof terrace and in the courtyard. The small kitchen has a kettle, toaster and gas hob, cutlery, plates, glasses, mugs, cups, and saucepans and frying pan, etc. The living room is furnished in traditional style and there is a fan upstairs. The thick stone walls of the house keep it cool in the heat of the summer. The villa is only 5 mins walk from the bus stop, local shops and very close to tavernas and the main square. Alonissos is a quiet and very unspoilt island offering a real chance to get away from it all and enjoy We fell in love with this beautiful island in 1999 and bought the house that year. We love coming back every year to enjoy the tranquillity and magic of the island.

The Sporades region
Alonissos is a stunning and unspoilt Greek island which is also home to 3 rare species of wildlife which are unique to this area: the Elenora falcon, the monk seal and the Jura goat. The island is next to the island of Skopelos where 'Mama Mia' was filmed. (45 mi9ns by hydrofoil) The island is the perfect place for a peaceful holiday away from it all. It is great for walkers and sun worshippers and even in high season, you can find deserted beaches. There are many beaches all over the island, almost all are secluded and surrounded by olive trees and pines. Walking tours are organised by a British ex pat, Chris Brown, who also fronts the local ex pats band which plays in the local square of the Old Village throughout the summer season. There are numerous boat trips which can be taken from the port of Pattitiri, to visit the seal sanctuary, a monastery and the almost deserted island of Peristera, which adjoins Alonissos.
The Old Village of Chora, where the villa is situated was partially destroyed by an earthquake in the mid 1960's and artists from all over Europe came to live in the ruins and renovated them. Some Greeks stayed up in Chora and are still there today. The winding cobbled streets are traffic free and a mule and his owner collect the rubbish every day. There is a small local shop which sells all basic foods including fruit and vegetables, an Italian ice cream shop, a bakery and numerous gift shops, antique shops and charming tavernas are all easily accessible from the villa. There are some excellent places to eat including The Alonni, with great sea views and Peri Orexi opposite the bus stop, where you can have a meal and plenty of wine for as little as 10 euros a head.
A few years ago Conde Nast voted Alonnisos as one of the best of all the Greek islands for a holiday.
The villa is only 25 mins walk downhill to the popular and beautiful beach, Megalo Mourtia. There are two excellent tavernas at the beach and sunbeds are free at Ria and Yianni's if you have lunch or dinner at their taverna, Mourtias, which is our favourite taverna on the island. Yiannis does all the cooking and the meals are all excellent with a great choice for vegetarians. From this beach, you can walk the goat track to Pattitiri, the port town, in only 25 mins.
Both the islands of Skopelos and Skiathos where 'Mama Mia' was filmed, are easily accessible by ferry or hydrofoil. The quickest way to reach Alonissos is to fly direct to Skiathos, but you can also get there by flying to Athens or Thessaloniki.
