The Northumberland region

The Northumberland Heritage Coast is a unique landscape with miles and miles of almost white, often deserted, sandy beaches framed by grass dunes and then gently rolling countryside. A chain of dramatic coastal castles stretching from Newcastle to the Scottish borders tells the story of a less than tranquil past, although these are now mostly transformed into visitor attractions and beautiful gardens.

Alnmouth is a pretty little seaside town with a rich history first as a port and an later as an up-market Victorian seaside resort for wealthy merchants from Newcastle and Durham, with many of their holiday houses remaining intact. It retains all the charm of a previous era and has now become the home of many writers, artists and photographers. It is well supplied with pubs and restaurants, plus a few local shops. Its proximity to the A1, Alnwick and with a mainline rail station, make it the ideal base for exploring the region.

The soft rolling landscape proximity to the sea create the huge and dramatic skies which are the subject of so many paintings and photographs of the area. Sunrises ans sunsets are particularly spectacular. The lack of light pollution also means that on cloudless nights the skies are a stargazers dream.

Please note that this cottage welcomes ONE well-behaved dog. An additional charge applies. Please enquire for details.

“Room with a View”

Reviewed 15 Jun 2014

The Summerhouse offers a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. It is in fact just one room but the clever use of space makes it a fun experience. Looking out of the window is a delight, we saw hares, partridge, swallows and more on a daily basis, fantastic sunsets too.. The lovely beach at Alnmouth is only a short distance. The local eateries are welcoming and provide good food. We had a great time and would be happy to return.

Really pleased that you enjoyed The Summerhouse and that it ticked so many boxes on your wildlife spotting wish-list. Future guests please note that although the view is guaranteed, hares, partridge and swallows are, like Jersey Royal potatoes and English asparagus, subject to seasonal availability. Little egrets, arctic terns, grey partridge, kingfishers, cuckoos, greater spotted woodpeckers and puffins (all seen recently within a mile of here) need to be ordered in advance. Dodo birds and Norwegian blue parrots are chargeable extras - ask for price before booking.

“Brilliantly located and all the facilities you need.”

We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Summerhouse for a walking holiday for which it is ideally located with the Coast and Castles bus service stopping 5 mins walk away. If it rains you can get a train from the station to Newcastle or Edinburgh. Would definitely go back again.

“Beautiful and intimate studio hideaway”

Myself and my partner went to the summerhouse for our 'mini-moon' after we got married. Absolutely perfect for relaxing and very laid back few days. Great for transport as well, we came from Manchester without the car and the trains and buses were fine for Almouth and Alnwick.

“Very special place...”

Fantastic little property, extremely relaxing & close to great pubs, beaches & walks... The place is brilliant, very compact but everything you need and more.. We were looking for a very quiet comfortable place to stay with things to do on the door step, The Summer Cottage ticked all our boxes, no problem at all......

“Very Good accomodation idea for a couple”

Reviewed 6 May 2013

We stayed at the Summerhouse during mid March for a week and found it to be clean, comfortable and an ideal location for visiting the tourist spots. It has a fantastic view looking over the fields and is tucked away in a quiet street away from the main roads. it was a fairly cold week and the only downside was that the small heater in the room wasn't great for heating the room up although the wood burner helped when that got going. It could probably do with another small electric mobile heater to warm up during the colder months. We were given clear instructions on getting to propert and were left to ourselves which was good.

Although it was an exceptionally cold start to 2013, this is a fair observation and, as we are planning other improvements this year, we will see about upgrading the heater before next winter.
