Description from owner

Description

Quarterdeck was originally built around 1740 as a “one-up one-down” fisherman's cottage and it appears on old plans from around this time. It was then extended sometime in the 1800s to create the 3 bedroom cottage you see today. The cottage was originally owned by the Duke of Northumberland, but passed in to private hands in the 1920s, although this short row of houses is still informally referred to as the “Percy Cottages”, Percy being the family name of the Duke.Alnmouth is an old trading port and fishing village that has been a tourist destination since the railways arrived in Victorian times. The cottage is in the heart of this small village and ideally situated for accessing the beautiful beaches of the Northumberland AONB and the multiple castles and other attractions that the region has to offer. The cottage and the location are ideal for families and small groups looking to relax and for those more interested in walking, sea kayaking or other activities.

Location description from owner

The England region

Alnmouth is situated within the Northumberland Coast AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and is regarded as the most picturesque village on this coast. The coastline is ideal for exploring either on foot or by using your car or the bus to visit the many fine sandy beaches that are within easy reach. Further afield there is Hadrian's Wall (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Holy Island and also the Northumberland National Park which contains the Cheviot Hills. If you want the excitement of a city that has reinvented itself then Newcastle is only 30 minutes away by train or about 45 minutes in the car.

Alnmouth

Alnmouth has a number of good pubs and restaurants as well as a handful of small shops (including a deli and a post office). The market town of Alnwick is only about 3 miles away and has a wider range of shops (including 3 supermarkets) and other conveniences. There are many castles and country houses within a short drive from Alnmouth. These include Alnwick Castle (home to the Duke of Northumberland), Warkworth Castle (English Heritage), Cragside (National Trust), and the much photographed ruin of Dunstanburgh Castle. Other great places to visit include the Alnwick Garden, the Farne Islands and Bamburgh. The region boasts many excellent golf courses, with a range of links style and parkland courses to suit all abilities. For those interested in water sports then sea-kayaking and kite-surfing are both popular activities and there is a water sports lake at Druridge Bay for those who want to avoid the sea.

“Excellent cottage for families”

Reviewed 17 Sep 2015

Three generations went for a long weekend in early September to celebrate a birthday. We loved the cottage so much, it was cosy, well equipped, clean and so handy for the beach. The grandchildren aged 4 and 6 loved the toys, games and DVDs and we all felt that Alnmouth was a perfect place for a simple seaside holiday. Have already recommended the cottage to everyone I know but now getting worried in case it gets so booked up that we won't manage to get in again!

“Really beautiful cottage within a minute walk from the most lovely beach”

Reviewed 7 Jun 2015

This cottage is beautiful, very spacious with lots of books and board games to play to create a lovely family atmosphere. You open the front door and to the right is the most lovely beach with stunning views, there is an amazing coastal walk to walkworth around four miles and perfect on a sunny day. The village has plenty of traditional pubs to eat and drink in and also a couple of really cute bistros and a couple of tea rooms.well worth a visit we sure will be back , just lovely

“Fabulous Base for Exploring Northumberland - and just a few minutes from the sea!”

Reviewed 5 May 2015

Perfect for the 4 of us (- the children are 9 & 11 yrs old). We visited Alnmouth beach everyday, as it is just across the road & over the sand dunes (takes all of 5 mins!) Well furnished & welcoming, we cooked in the cottage a couple of nights but you could easily eat out every night (Sun Inn, Hooked, Bistro 23, Red Lion...). Puffin Cruises was a lovely trip out on a boat for an hour - you don't land on the island but we saw lots of puffins & grey seals! (Obviously there are no guarantees...it's wildlife!) The Village Store was well stocked, as was the Post Office. The town's gift shop has some beautiful things in & we couldn't resist buying some seaside things to remind us of our lovely stay.

“An ideally situated cottage and a lovely place to stay”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2014

The cottage surpassed our expectations. It was furnished to a good modern standard and had every appliance that we needed. A well-equipped small kitchen serviced a roomy dining space. The sitting room was very pleasant (the photo doesn't really do it justice). The double bedroom was a delightful one although the king sized bed was too firm for my liking. One of the other twin bedrooms was rather snug for two adults to share. Alnmouth was an excellent village from which to explore the area and the cottage was ideally situated and a lovely place to stay.

“Excellent accommodation in very nice village”

Very pleasant cottage, newly updated. Village is great to visit with good eating places in the same street as the cottage and walks that start from the door.

“Lovely Stay :-)”

Reviewed 18 Oct 2013

We stayed at Quarterdeck for 3 nights on our way up to Scotland and what a great choice that was! Tony was professional & helpful from the start & very thorough showing us around the cottage when we arrived in Alnmouth. The village is beautiful & we loved our time there, great pubs, interesting shops & all the amenities you could want. Alnwick is close by with a big variety of shops & the magical Alnwick Castle, The cottage itself is extremely well equipped, quiet, immaculately clean & warm. Agree with other reviews here & in the guestbook that the toilet is in a terrible position and uncomfortable but probably no other option in the narrow bathroom. Also agree with a guest book entry that suggested having a clothes airer rack...that would be handy. All in all though it is a gorgeous cottage that is beautifully decorated & appointed, we would definitely stay again & recommend to others! Thanks :-)

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Quarterdeck and for all the positive words as we do try very hard to maintain a high level of both comfort and cleanliness. For those looking to book for next year (2014) I wanted to point out that we will be having the bathroom remodelled during the Winter and this will improve the layout and provide more space around the toilet as at present I do agree that it is not ideal.

“Charming, convenient, clean, surprisingly spacious with all the amenities we required.”

Reviewed 22 Sep 2013

We stayed for a 4 night break. Alnmouth was very clean and picturesque and convenient for visiting local attractions. Local restaurants were of good quality and reasonably priced. Good location for visiting Northumberland as a whole. The cottage was well presented with everything we required. The 3 bedrooms were of a good size and the lounge and kitchen were also spacious and comfortable. We would have no hesitation going back to the Quarterdeck. All arrangements went smoothly and Tony the owner was very friendly and helpful.

“Terrific venue for a walking holiday with friends”

Reviewed 22 May 2013

Five old friends getting together once a year to catch up, do some walking and relax over a few drinks means that we need a flexible and quality venue. The quarterdeck was just this and is set in a beautiful village right by the sea and at the start of a great coastal walk. Alnmouth has several great pubs (one of which does fab pizzas), and the cottage was perfect for spending a few hours into the morning playing cards, listening to music (via the provided iPod dock) while chatting and having a few drinks.

“Tranquill getaway”

Reviewed 21 May 2013

We enjoyed the calm quiet, fisherman's cottage, much larger than I first thought. The cottage was very clean and well appointed, we enjoyed the games, and never turned the TV on. Situated on the main street of Alnmouth, I'd recommend the Red Lion for food or the Italian restaurant (book early) The antipasti was great. The local beach was lovely and there are so many castles and quaint villages in the area to visit.

“A perfect seaside retreat”

Reviewed 8 May 2013

Had a wonderful, relaxing break. Quarterdeck really is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world. It's situated just a few yards from the beautiful Alnmouth shoreline and is very comfortably furnished throughout, with everything you need for a stress free break.
