The Valenciana region
The town of Almoradi, is within the Vega Baja region of Spain, renowned for its orange and lemon groves, and wonderful climate. It has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as the 4th most benefical in the world, due to its mild climate all year round. The average summer temperatures are in excess of 30 degrees and the average winter temperature, rarely falls below 18 degrees.thus helping to alleviate symptoms such as rhuematisim and athritis.
The salt lakes within the area, that are often pink in colour, are classed as preservation areas for an abundance of bird species. Including flamingos, these feed at the Santa Pola lakes and are a sight to behold.
The area boasts over 100km of Coastline, with Golden sandy beaches, Deep blue seas, and Palm trees,
The historic town of Santa Pola is a 35 min drive away, this has excellent beaches, an old town with its ancient castle walls. From here you can take boat trips to the Island the Tabarca, enjoy a first class meal, or take a glass bottom boat trip to view the sealife.
Almoradi is no more than a 20 minute drive from a good selection of golf courses; with La Finca (5 minutes) & la Marquesa clubs significantly closer. There are also 2 waterparks close by. There are many fiestas (festivals) throughout Almoradi's calendar, some of which are a real spectacle & well worth a look. If you are interested in an art or painting holiday on the Costa Blanca then check out our local contact, Martin, at www.martin-enterprises.com/BLAH/.
The cuisine is another major bonus though made up of mainly traditional Spanish fare; although international tastes are also catered for. You will find bars and restaurants catering for most tastes from traditional Spanish food through to Chinese and even your full English/Irish breakfast.
Almoradi boasts a thriving, bustling traditional market every Saturday morning. If that's not enough for you, you will also find Dolores holds a market every Friday morning and Catral holds one every Saturday morning .
Almoradi is also well known for its mild climate & the entire region enjoys sunshine for in excess of 320 days per year. The sun is at its hottest during the summer months, with temperatures rarely falling below 30°C (86°F). Winters are typically very mild with averages hovering around 18°C (64°F). In recent times there has been increased interest in the town. It has to be said Almoradi does offer something a little different from that of many of coastal towns; it has retained much of its inherent culture & tradition. Unlike the coastal resorts that become ghost towns out of holiday season, Almoradi stays vibrant and alive all year round. Sporting enthusiasts are still well catered for here, with the town boasting a good municipal swimming pool & other facilities.
The local area
It's just a 5 minute walk into the centre of Almoradi where there is a church and town square shaded by trees, where local people relax and have a drink. The square is a real social meeting place for people of all
ages to congregate. There are approx 50 bars, café's and restaurants (including Spanish, Chinese, British
& Irish) all within minutes walk from the apartment and on a Saturday the town hosts a local market with fresh
food and local wares. For a light bite I recommend Cafe Vienna or Terratremo 1829 on Calle San Emigdio
and for great value. For an early morning cafe con leche join the throngs of locals in cafe Tropicana on
Calle Cervantes, Comic bar where the owner is very friendly or treat yourself to a decadent pastry in
Epinosa Bakery at Calle 9 de Octobre and Calle Purissima. For great tapas try Angel bar on Calle Pablo
Picasso and for a great steak and a bit of Irish banter try The Blue Clover Guiness bar. Que Paso just off the square towards the theatre is also a good choice. For great pizza and Italian, try San Remo just off the square. If you are looking for live music try the Greenhouse on Calle Mayor, just past Bar Elite. There is usually a good mix of Spanish and British bands playing. Another live music option on a Saturday night is the Amarion venue
on Calle Espana, a short walk from the apartment. For those of you who prefer home from home the brilliant Irish Guiness bar, The Blue Clover can be found on Calle Canalejas the British Bars, Bar Elite is Calle Mayor with pool, bingo, big screen football, darts, bingo, pub quiz etc. If Karoke is your thing, try Bar El Chaparel
opposite the apartment on Av. Doctor Maranon. Behind the apartment complex (Calle Comunidad Valencia) is
a great late night bar (only open Thursday to Sunday) called Level pub, it gets a hip crowd! Also, pay a visit to
Mezquita Garden, a lovely little bar with a Morrocan theme and a garden bar with a retractable roof (at
Calle La Purisima and Calle Amparo Quiles). Fancy some great food or an Irish Coffee, then try La Galeria,
Calle Picasso, close to the square. The square also boots a nice Heladeria or ice cream parlour. You can
pick up the English newspapers in the newsagents behind the church.
The best supermarket is the large Mercadona at 17 Calle Comunidad Valencia (on the same street as the
theatre). Try the local bakery San Andres, a few minutes walk from the apartment, on Calle Communidad Valencia, for a fresh baguette or pastry for breakfast in the morning.
The local resorts of Guadamar (15km) with its beautiful beaches and Torrevieja (20km) with beaches, a harbour and a more lively atmosphere are close by. If you want to keep an eye on Celtic FC, the local Hoops bar along the beach front in Guadamar shows the big games.
Local transport links & attractions
There is a new bus station in Almoradi and the timetable is displayed outside the terminal. The local buses go to many places including Guadamar beach, Torrevieja, Elche (well worth a visit especially to Heurto del Cura
and the old town where you can get a little train to take you around all the palm gardens), Dolores, Algorfa,
Benijofar, Callosa, Quesada and Oriheula. If you're hiring a car, other great places to visit are Novelda
(don't miss the Modernista museum or the magnificent church of Mary Magdalene), Aspe, Abanilla, Fortuna, Ricote, Ojos, Blanca and Santa Pola.
