Almerimar – one of the best kept secrets in Spain
Opportunity to rent owner's private apartment – limited availability
You can see the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains from Almerimar, yet here is a charming, little known resort, with the best climate in Spain, one of the largest marinas, and 27 holes of golf. With lots of bars, restaurants, shops, a high quality supermarket, miles of beaches and a nature reserve, Almerimar remains unspoilt by mass tourism and is a great destination for a family holiday…but don't come here for discos and all night bars! Come to Almerimar for a laid back holiday and discover this authentic Spanish resort with (almost!) guaranteed sunshine.

The Andalucia region
40km (25 miles) to the west of Almeria, Almerimar is a beautiful resort built around the original harbour and flanked on both sides by natural parks and unspoilt beaches. The town is maintained to the highest of standards, roads are lined with palm trees and flora.
The climate is subtropical, warm and dry. This area boasts the lowest rainfall in Spain. The snow-capped (7 months of the year) Sierra Nevada provide a backdrop and Granada is less than 2 hours away by car.
Almerimar is bursting with local pride and during the summer months the whole town indulge in fairs and family entertainment such as, beach parties and offer a warm welcome for all to join in. There is a vibrant “expat” community of many European nationalities including British, Swedish and German some are permanent residents and some “snowbirds” living in Almerimar between October and May
The 27 hole golf course is adjacent to the new 5 star Hotel Almerimar (re-opened in 2012 after extensive refurbishment) – see separate Golf information in “Links”
Almerimar has 13km of wide, sandy beaches with bars, restaurants, 2 hotels, shopping and supermarkets. There is a Doctors surgery and 2 pharmacies. The nearest hospital is less than 5 miles away at El Ejido and is located opposite the Copo Supermarket next to the main motorway exit for Almerimar.
With the blue flag award winning beach only metres away from the marina, Almerimar is a delightful resort set amidst some of Spain's finest scenery. Almerimar has uncrowded sandy beaches with calm, clean, warm water. Lifeguards monitor the main parts of the beach in summer and there are facilities for the disabled including a buggy to assist bathers in and out of the sea. Sailing, windsurfing, snorkelling, and scuba diving are available all year round. Fishing off the beach is popular with the locals.
Perhaps the best thing about Almerimar is the weather!! It is one of the driest places in Europe with a micro-climate protected by the Sierra Nevada. 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the average daytime temperature in the summer is 27ºC and in the winter is still 15ºC.
The weather and the underground wells of mountain water around El Ejido make this the home for much of Europe's winter fruit and vegetables growth – when you first visit the miles of plastic sheeting look very strange – but when you see the prices of fruit and vegetables in the market or supermarket you immediately see the benefits and high quality!
Almerimar is a popular resort for Spaniards, many of whom own holiday homes in the town. Undiscovered by non-Spaniards it is an unspoilt town with friendly locals, and lots to do nearby.
The Costa de Almeria region
Whilst you may find that you never want to leave Almerimar – there is plenty to visit and see in the local area and further afield.
Between Almerimar and Almeria are the highly developed tourist resorts of Roquetas de Mar and Aguadulce. These are a short ride from Almerimar and have all the facilities of any modern resort including an Aquarium and Water Park.
The water park at Roquetas de Mar is open during summer months – see more about Roquetas here
To the east of Almeria we find the rugged coast of the Cabo de Gata - Nijar natural park. This arid desert landscape is sparsely populated. Visitors feel a sense of exploration here as many of the coves can only be reached on foot. This area is particularly popular with nature lovers and back-packers. The most popular coastal village is San José, a small coastal town with a marina, a sandy beach and numerous restaurants.
In the north of the Costa de Almeria there are the naturist beaches of Vera. A little further south is Mojacar which successfully combines the popular beach resort with the hillside white village that tourists will love to explore.
Almeria city is worth a visit with the Moorish Alcazaba castle overlooking the metropolis.
More about Almeria here:-
A visit to Granada and the Alhambra Palace is worth doing as well. It was the summer residence of the Kings and Queens of Spain. It is one of the world's most beautiful sightseeing destinations. It is approximately a 2 hour drive from Almerimar.
In the summer, children might enjoy a visit to the cowboy theme park called Mini Hollywood. Located near Tabernas, a 45 minute drive away, it is where the 1970's spaghetti westerns were filmed.
The nearest town to Almerimar is El Ejido. The 50,000 population town sits on the nearby motorway and boasts good shopping, a Spanish 2nd division football side, cinemas, theatre and a local street market (usually Wednesdays!)
There are numerous drives into the Sierra Nevada mountains with stunning scenery. They include a drive over the mountains to Porto Ragua and La Calahorrah and a drive though white Alpajurran villages on the road to Orgiva.
