Description

Casa de los Espejos or “The House of Mirrors” is a stunning 250 year old, four bedroom house in the charming Andalucian town of Alhama de Granada, southern Spain. After a painstaking restoration project lasting three years, it was listed and protected in 2008 for its historical interest by the Council of Andalucia.

The house sleeps up to eight people although couples are also welcome. A large sitting room, kitchen, dining room, games room and additional upstairs sitting room provide plenty of indoor space for everyone to spread out and seek some peace and quiet if so desired. The crowning glory of the property has to be its roof terrace, which has spectacular, commanding 360° views over the town, the church, the castle, the main plaza and the rolling patchwork of agricultural land melting into the mountains beyond.

Nestled deep in the heart of Andalucia, the spa-town of Alhama de Granada is described in The Rough Guide to Andalucía as ‘one of the unsung gems of Granada province.’

It is an ideal base for cultural holidays due to it’s proximity to Granada city and many other historical Andalucian cities such as Cordoba, Seville and Malaga. It is also superbly located for walking, cycling, climbing, skiing and other such activity based holidays. The dramatic and varied landscapes, architecture, local customs and fiestas also lend themselves wonderfully to artistic breaks such as painting or photographic holidays. The Mediterranean coast is 45 minutes due south of Alhama.

Further details indoors

Family friendly roof terrace to enjoy all through the day and evening.

Fantastic farmhouse kitchen.

Underfloor heating and wood-burning stove, with logs provided in winter (a great time to visit).

Luxury bathrooms (bathroom 2 is a wet-room).

Further details outdoors

The house is a stones throw from the towns main square where there is a playground with swings, climbing frames etc - and a wide open space for kids to run around and adults to walk about and socialise, as well as numerous (and award-winning) tapas bars and restaurants. The street itself is very quiet and has plenty of free parking. It is just across the street from the local bakery which is very handy in the morning to get a fresh warm loaf for breakfast. The town is also famous throughout Spain for its natural hot springs which has drawn visitors for generations to take advantage of the open air (and free) spa.

Location description from owner

The Andalucia region

The Hot Springs, from which the town derives its name, are 1 km from the centre of town. There is a National Park with impressive mountain views, rewarding walks and fantastic picnic facilities including stone BBQ, tables & benches. Granada, with the world famous Alhambra Palace, is 45 minutes away. Ronda, with its spectacular gorge, is a 90 minute drive. Malaga, the elegant Mediterranean town, birth place of Pablo Picasso, is 1 hour and 15 minutes by car.

Alhama de Granada

Alhama sits precariously along the edge of a breathtaking limestone gorge, which can be walked from end to end, with caves, ruined mills and natural pools in the Alhama river to explore. At the far end of this 30 minute walk you are richly rewarded with a drink or some great local cuisine at either El Ventorro or Pato Loco restaurants or our favourite restaurant La Seguiriya overlooking the gorge from the shaded terrace. If that sounds too much like hard work you can have a dip, jacuzzi, steam and massage in the stunning Arab baths situated in enormous caves behind El Ventorro or a swim in the Pato Loco pool. There’s a diverse range of tapas bars and restaurants all within an easy walk of the house & to our great delight Alhama is in one of the last few remaining pockets of Spain where tapas are still given with every drink ordered - a great way to sample a wide range of local cuisine for free! Other activities in and around Alhama include cycling, walking, climbing, canoeing, quad biking and horse riding. You can be advised on all of these by English speaking activity organisers based in Alhama or arrange equipment hire and guided excursions.
