The Muscat Governorate region
Ruling body - His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said is Head of State and rules by de[cree. He is assisted by a cabinet of ministers, Diwan of the Royal Court (the central body of bureaucratic affairs), and the Majlis Ash Shura, a body of representatives elected by the populace.
Population - Approximately 2.5 million. Around 1.5 million are Omani nationals. The remaining are expatriates
Climate - The climate differs widely across the Sultanate. It is hot and humid in the coastal areas in summer; while it is hot and dry in the interior with the exception of the higher mountains, which enjoy a moderate climate throughout the year.
Currency and Costs - The Omani Riyal (OR) is divided into 1,000 baiza. Currency can be exchanged in banks or at currency exchange booths located in the airport.
Shopping in Oman - The Capital area has a number of shopping malls, mostly situated in Qurum at the split of the main highway, and in the Al Khuwair area. Local produce in the super markets is reasonably priced and of a good standard. All the shopping malls are fully air-conditioned, brightly lit and cleaned round the clock, have their own mix of shops and showrooms, car parks, cafes and food courts and play areas for children.
For a more traditional experience, the two main souqs (markets) are located in Muttrah and Nizwa. The Souqs are a shoppers' delight offering anything from wallets for R.O. 1 to antique khanjars for R.O. 100+. Frankincense, silverware, antiques and garments are also largely available. (may not be exported.)
The Souqs retains much of its old world charm with row upon row of matchbox size shops, set in winding tiny lanes under a palm-frond canopied roof. Here, Bedouin women in traditional dress sell the fragrant aromas known as "Bukhoor," combining various raw materials such as sandalwood, frankincense and natural oils.
You can purchase souvenirs like Khanjars and coffee pots, Bedouin jewelry, clothing (dishdashas, kummas (caps), massar (turban) and khanjar for the men; dishdashas, surwal (trousers), lihaff (shawl) for the women).

"wonderful stay with very nice host family"
we stayed 2 nights in the garden rooms in Muskat. There are 4 small bungalows in the garden of a lovely villa, a quiet and nice place. Salma the host is a very friendly and helpful. The garden rooms are located not so far from the Grand Moschee and the Chedii hotel. You need a car when you are staying there.

"Choose a B&B with Salma at Garden Roomz to see Oman"
Arrived late at night and was met graciously. Awoke to a wonderful breakfast which wound up being one of nine to come in the following days. Relaxed, animated conversation with Salma and her family over long ( our choice) breakfasts. Salma very helpful in advising us on car rental, places to see and visit, local culture. We had lived in the country 33 years ago and Salma introduced us to the modern Muscat and Oman in a way which could not have been better. If you want the true Oman experience in a pleasant informative way stay with Salma at Garden Roomz Oman ! Doug and Anne Gregory

"The perfect ending of our tour through fascinating Oman"
Great place, if you like to get in touch with locals and get first hand information about life in Oman. Very kind and interesting host family. Salma's Arabian breakfast is fantastic, much better and more authentic than what you get in a hotel and more than you can eat. We recommend a navsat to drive around in Muscat and to find the way back to the house. We would come back any time.

The garden, the room, the breakfast, but most of all the hostess Salma, make this an extraordinary place to stay. Really local food, really local knowledge. Salma is wonderful and we couldn't have been happier with our decision to start our trip to Oman here.

Comfortable and clean accommodations. Salma (owner) is very gracious. Children were welcomed by her granddaughters and able to play together in the garden for a while. It is in a great location with easy access to the main highway, minutes from the public beach, minutes from the Grand Mosque. Great exposure to traditional Omani food at breakfast. Very relaxed atmosphere.

"A 'home away from home' experience with a Muscat family"
We really enjoyed meeting and staying with Salma and her family, and staff. The location of GardenRoomz is good, in a quiet residential area offering good access to various places in Muscat. The directions given to guests could be clearer (satnav co-ordinates would be helpful). It is nice to be staying in the garden, and to be given access to the living room in the house. The breakfasts, taken at a table on the terrace, at which Salma and her family will join you, are great, including home-cooked arabic food. We just suggest to Salma that she upgrades the rooms in the near future, and perhaps develops the garden a bit so that it offers an even more pleasant space in which to sit. Thank you, Salma … we would like to stay in touch … and visit you again.

We arrived early in the morning in Muscat and could not find Salma's house. But after a telephone call she came to collect us. It turned out to be a beautful big house with 4 small houses in the garden in a quite neighbourhood. Salma was very welcoming and informative. It felt like home. A perfect place to stay in Muscat. In the morning a local breakfast and when we left for the rest of our trip a big hug from Salma

"An oasis of tranquility and hospitality."
I had a very lovely stay at the residence of mama Salma. The property is in a quiet suburb of Muscat in a very tranquil setting. The garden features fishes and turtles which the kids loved. The rooms in the garden are like standalone hotel rooms and are wonderfully air-conditioned. For one not used to 40+ degree heat they are very welcome indeed. The most wonderful aspect is the hospitality itself. Salma took the time to make us feel welcome and engage in discussion about the traditions, custom, and history of Oman. The staff are very approachable and make you feel so welcome. Loved my stay and will always stay here when visiting Oman.. Inshallah soon.

"Glad we had the chance to come to this beautiful place"
Our very last minute booking was as welcomed as we could have never expected. Salma welcomed us in her beautiful home and gave us immediately the feeling of being part of an Omani family. She made us feel comfortable and gave us enough privacy and made sure we knew that we were always welcome in her house and could always ask her if we needed anything. The place is located well in the middle of Muscat and everything can be reached very easily by car. The accommodations are clean and offer a great rest in the middle of a selfmade Omani garden. Every morning Salma offered breakfast and told us more about the Omani culture and informed us about great places to visit. We would recommend Salma's place to anyone who is interested in the Omani life and would like to know more about this welcoming and friendly culture.

"Beautiful oasis in Oman!"
My husband and I found Garden Roomz based on excellent reviews on the Airbnb website. We were not disappointed! Selma was a gracious host and is a lovely person. We felt welcomed from the first when she went out of her way to meet us when we were lost! When we arrived at her home she welcomed us with a cold drink in her home. Our garden room was lovely and comfortable and we were greeted each morning with a fresh breakfast cooked by Selma and we really appreciated that Selma had breakfast with us and sharing so much about life in Oman. We loved staying with Selma and we would love to stay again. Thank you Selma!
