The Berry region
THE LOIRE VALLEY REGION
Architectually, the region of Center provides the best examples of Gothic cathedrals anywhere, with the Loire Valley offering the most sumptuous palaces in France.
The Berry, of which Bourges is the capital, produces more than half of the country's fine china. It recently came to fame when some of its porcelain was recovered from the Titanic.
Vouvray, Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé wines all come from vineyards near the river Loire. Some of the best wines are to be found at Bonnezeaux and at Vouvray, where they produce a very good sparkling wine. Consider also trying the remarkably good, local cheeses including crottin de Chavignol and Ste-Maure goat cheeses. Orléans vinegar was also once as famous as Dijon mustard, with more than 200 vinegar-makers and merchants working in the city.
THE LIMOUSIN REGION
This deeply rural region of France, la France profonde, is set between the Massif Central and the Atlantic coast, enjoying mild winters and long, hot summers. It's a country of rivers, lakes and forests, including the vast man-made reservoir of Vassivière.
Here in Limousin you will find some of the most beautiful villages of France, such as Collonge-la-Rouge, Curemonte, Mortemart, St-Robert, Ségur-le-Château and Treignac. There are also many reminders of the past, such as the château at Châlus, where Richard Coeur de Lion was mortally wounded. For a long time a fiefdom of England, the region was annexed to the crown of France by Henri IV in 1607. More recently during the Second World War the Nazis executed all inhabitants of the village of Oradour-sur-Glane whose charred ruins remain a memorial to the crime inflicted.
The area is blessed with festivals and family activities throughout the summer, with opportunities for outdoor pursuits found at one's doorstep. The largest lake that is local to the area, Lac d'Eguzon, provides a number of sandy beaches in which to relax. It also offers a number of water sporting activities with the opportunity to learn water-skiing and canoeing at one of the schools. For this reason, Lac'd'Eguzon even features on You Tube!
Should water not be your first choice there are a network walks and cycling routes encircling the lake's perimeter or linking local villages. Eguzon also has an excellent tourist information centre from which to research such activities and local events. Provided below is a summary of local places of interest and pursuits that the family can involve themselves in.
PLACES OF INTEREST & PURSUITS
1. BATHING/ WATER SPORTS
Fougere village (8km) has the nearest beach to L'Ouche on Lac D'Eguzon and which offers a number of free ferry crossings to Éguzon-Chantôme JETTY throughout the day during the summer. There are other more secluded beaches dotted up and down the length of the lake providing plenty of choice. Should Eguzon not be your fancy more private beaches can be found at Trois Lacs, about 25km from L'Ouche.
2. WALKING A 'RONDONEE'
Social walking events or 'Rondonnees', are as popular in France as they are in Britiain and a great way to explore the countryside. Between now and August the Berry Region boasts up to 99 events, varying in distance. The annual Deux Vallee covering the whole Creuse valley (42km in length) takes place early in May though you may find this is pre-entry only.
3. LOCAL SITE-SEEING
Gargilesse was recently voted the prettiest town in France and which is situated north of Lac d'Eguzon. The town is in a mountainous spot, with spectacular scenery and which hosts art galleries, restaurants and cafés. This pretty town was also the home of George Sand, the famous French author and mistress of Chopin.
Should a calm trip on the lake sound enticing, catch the local leisure boat making its way calmly along the southern tip of the lake and down the Creuse river to the jetty at Crozant. One has a splendid panoramic view of the town's medieval multiple castle turrets. These are found lining the tops of a prominent spur that juts away from the river valley.
You may be aware that the nearest commercial town to L'Ouche, Aigurande, has twice hosted the middle stages of the TOUR DE FRANCE recently?. Each summer, the area also organises annual road cycle races including Tour de Limosin and the Chateauroux Classic. For more off-road pursuits, there are a number of recognised VTT courses dotted around some of the local villages. Maps of the routes can be found on the master board posted at Measnes (5km), or by applying through the VTT web site www.veloclub-lasouterraine.com (+33 (0)188.8.131.52.61)
Lourdoueix St Michel (2km) and Fresslines (6km) both have Boulangeries and are the nearest villages that sell essential items. If you are feeling lazy freshly baked farmers' bread (Pain/ Batons), croissant and pain au raisin is normally delivered sold by van in L'Ouche between 10 and 11AM on most mornings. Aigurande on the other hand (9kms) is host to an 'atmospheric' farmers market every Friday morning, as well as having a large supermarket and a competitively priced filling station.

“Lovely cosy accommodation, beautiful peaceful setting.”
We couldn't have asked for a better holiday home, pretty house, all the facilities we needed, clean and welcoming and we loved being so near the beautiful Lac d'Eguzon which we swam in every day. Friendly and helpful neighbours. Lovely barbecue area for lazy evenings in the garden. Boys enjoyed the pool table and the big box of K-Nex too!
Thank you for taking the time to send such a positive review. We are also pleased that you had a great holiday and a wonderful experience at Lac' D'Eguzon as well as having the time to sample some of the activities either closer to or at our cottage. You may be aware that this coming week it is predicted there will be an excellent viewing of the Perseids meteor shower. Joie de Vie is in an ideal position for such events as there are no street lights and there is very little city glow thus providing the perfect night skies for viewing. Should you want to catch this annual event in 2014 and top those experiences already expressed, we are open to receive advanced bookings. Check our page on Holiday Lettings for availability. Thank you once again, and look forward to seeing you next year.
“Wonderful setting for relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings close to many places of interest.”
With my 3 adult daughters we had an unforgettable holiday. We particularly liked that it was close to many lovely villages with great places to enjoy good food as well as the markets. Altough we did not use the swimming facilities it is close to a lake in a beautiful setting.
“Perfect holiday retreat.”
We have stayed in this holiday gite for a couple of years now. It is perfect for a holiday retreat. Very friendly locals and lots of sight seeing. You can be as busy or as lazy as you wish. Lovely quiet location. The gite has all amenities you could want. We love the outdoor BBQ area and have had many late evenings star gazing.
“A very comfortable, clean holiday home.”
A comfortable holiday home with all necessary equipment provided. The shower could do with updating and I am afraid I did not find the bed terribly comfortable, but the couch was very comfortable. It is in a lovely location with good local amenities and I would recommend it to others.
Ian. Thank you for honest opinion. We will strive to make your next stay even more comfortable!
