The Bearn region

The department of the Pyrenees Atlantique is in the south eastern most area of the Aquitaine region . Here , the high mountains of the Pyrenean chain form the frontier between France and Spain . Much of the mountain landscape is national parkland known for it's outstanding natural beauty . The Spanish side of the mountains have a drier mediterranean climate whilst the French slopes tend to be much greener. Moving west into the Basque country the landscape is now of gentler hills until the Atlantic Ocean is reached near Biarritz . In these differnt areas, relatively close together, there is an enormous wealth of contrast to be enjoyed . Both naturally and culturally .

Accous

Located in the Pyreneen National Park , the sleepy village of Accous sits in the middle region of the magnificent Valée d'Aspe . This is a paradise for those who enjoy the great outdoors as well as those who want to kick back and enjoy life in the slow lane . Being amonst the mountains there are loads of great hikes of all grades . These give ideal access to natural features such as lakes, forests and peaks as well as a chance to see the wildlife and flora . Other popular activities include paragliding , rafting , fishing and cycling to name a few .
In the villages of Accous and Bedous (2km) collectively, most things can be found including grocery shops , pharmacy , butchers , bakers and a hand full off cafe bars and restaurants . Bike hire is available at Bedous where the tourist office for the valley is also located. Bedous also has an excellent local market every Thursday .
The main town of Oloron St Marie is 25 km away where there is an excellent indoor/outdoor pool . There is a large Friday market selling mostly locally grown and made produce . The area is known for it's cheese production in which traditional methods are still employed using the mountains for grazing . Wine production is also a feature of the region where visits to the various vineyards are popular .
Just over the border (30km) , the Spanish villages and towns give a whole new and contrasting experience .
