Location description from owner

The England region

The spectacular Jurassic Coast in Dorset and East Devon is England's first natural World Heritage Site. This unique stretch of coastline sits amongst the ranks of the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon as one of the wonders of the natural world. The coastline is world famous for its fossils. Chesil Beach, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are among the 'must see' locations along this spectacular 95 mile stretch of coastline.

Visit coastal towns such as Weymouth, Lyme Regis and Bridport with their mix of colourful harbours, sandy beaches and seaside fun, or head inland and discover our fascinating market towns.Enjoy unique shopping and farmers' markets, amazing architecture and plenty of places to eat out and sample the local produce. There aren't many areas that can claim a huge naked chalk giant, a coastline where you can follow in the footsteps of dinosaurs and the largest hillfort in Europe - but with the vast scope of Dorset's heritage you will discover these and much much more!

The Dorset landscape has long been the inspiration for many authors and poets and more recently for TV and film producers. Above all, this is Thomas Hardy country - ancient Wessex, home of the Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the D'urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. You will find many other famous literary associations across the area including Jane Austen, John Fowles, TE Lawrence and Enid Blyton.

There are some outstanding places to visit in Dorset where you can soak up the atmosphere of bygone eras. Major ancient and historic sites include the impressive Maiden Castle hillfort, Pilsdon Pen, Eggardon Hill and Hambledon and Hod Hills - the views alone are worth the steep climb! A steam train ride with Swanage Railway gives you unique views of Corfe Castle's imposing ruins.

Abbotsbury

Abbotsbury is a popular, pretty village steeped in history and surrounded by spectacular scenery. The village has much to offer a visitor of any age as it includes the famous 14th century St Catherine's Chapel (a local landmark often captured on photos of Chesil Beach), old Abbey ruins, delightful cottage architecture, traditional country tea rooms and pubs and arguably three of Dorset's most popular visitor attractions (The Swannery, Sub-tropical Gardens and the Children's Farm). If you still have energy to burn then a climb to the summit of Abbotsbury Hill will reward you with one of the most awe-inspiring views in the whole of Dorset with panoramas over Chesil Beach, Portland, Lyme Bay and the East Devon coastline.

“A great holiday property with much to see and do locally”

Reviewed 22 Jun 2015

We found that the Grain Store had everything we needed for a lovely holiday in Dorset. Well appointed, clean and all things thought through, including good wi-fi, a well stocked kitchen and utility room, and even a stock of DVDs to keep our son happy! The property also had a beautiful garden that was safe for our toddler to run around in. We found that Abbotsbury, though a tiny village, had plenty to see and do for a few days, and then we ventured further afield to Lyme Regis and Dorchester for other days out. We would happily stay at the Grain Store again.

Thank you, we are delighted that you and your family enjoyed your stay at The Grain Store and holiday in Dorset exploring all things Jurassic fantastic. We hope to welcome you back for more fun filled adventures soon.

“Wonderful weekend away in Abbotsbury”

The Grain Store was superb, very clean and tidy, everything there you could possibly want. The building has great character and is beautifully laid out. The views are stunning and the walks are great. It’s the best Holiday Cottage I have stayed in and we will definitely be going back soon.

Thank you, we are delighted that you loved The Grain Store, Jurassic coastline and Dorset countryside. We look forward to welcoming you back to stay again.
