Queenstown holidays

Known as the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown, New Zealand has every adventure sport you can imagine and then some!

Add to this the spectacular scenery of the Southern Alps, plus an affordable rental property on Holiday Lettings and you have a recipe for fun, excitement and an amazing holiday.

About Queenstown

Surrounded by mountains on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, Queensland, and the Wakatipu Basin that it sits on, was formed 15,000 years ago by glacial movement.

Native Maoris have lived there for 700 years, but it was the discovery of gold in 1862 that had European settlers rushing to build a shanty town on the shore of the lake.

When the gold ran out, the settlers left leaving the land to the sheep farmers who went about their business undisturbed until tourists started arriving to ski the surrounding mountains.

One of Queenstown’s biggest claims to fame is the invention of bungee jumping. One day, AJ Hackett and Henry Van Asch allowed the public to use their invention to jump off the 43 metres high Kawarau Bridge. You can still try it today! Go on, we dare you.

Today, Queenstown is a cosmopolitan place full of youngsters from around the globe all in search of Southern Hemisphere skiing and great nightlife.

What to do

Adventure sports still remain the biggest reason to visit Queenstown. You'll find a terrifying 134-metre bungee jump called the “Nevis Thriller” that is supposed to be as close to base jumping as you can get without a parachute.

Jet-boating is another of Queenstown’s adrenalin-pumping activities. You basically fly down the Kawarau River at speeds of 90kph while making death-defying turns and 360-degree spins.

If you’re more in the mood for keeping your feet firmly on the ground, visit Kiwi Birdlife Park where you can learn all about New Zealand’s native bird and other species that call the South Island home.

With the popularity of Queensland as a destination still growing, several young chefs have opened up restaurants around the lake. This means you're able to taste the finest New Zealand lamb with a locally grown pinot noir while gazing at snow-capped mountains. Incredible!

Top Queensland travel tips

The best time to visit Queensland depends on what you’re looking to do. If it’s skiing, then you need to visit mid-June through early October, when most of the Northern Hemisphere are on their summer holidays.

If crowds are not your thing, visit between March and April or in November and avoid long lines.

Because Queenstown attracts a young crowd, the bar scene can be pretty rowdy, so if you’re just looking to go out for a quiet drink, head up the lake to Glenorchy for tranquillity in a “Lord of the Rings” setting.

There is no escaping the fact that Queenstown has one of the most spectacular natural settings on the planet.

Combine the scenery with a great place to stay that you found on Holiday Lettings, and there really is not a bad time to visit Queensland and the South Island of New Zealand.
