Pisa holidays

Pisa might be best known for its Leaning Tower, but there are plenty of other things to see and do in this charming Italian city. With great historical attractions, some of the best Italian cuisine in the world, and friendly and hospitable locals, Pisa has all ingredients for a perfect European getaway.

although Pisa is divided into four historical quarters, several of the main attractions in the city can be found in the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Piazza dei Miracoli. There are lots of other shops, restaurants and attractions things to visit outside of the main square as well though.

Be sure not to leave Pisa without exploring some of these major sights as well:

  • Leaning Tower of Pisa: Originally conceived as the cathedral's bell tower, this structure is over 800 years old and by far the most popular attraction in the city.
  • Duomo di Pisa: The cathedral is a prime example of classic Gothic architecture and houses artwork from major artists including Giambologna and Della Robbia.
  • Battistero: This large dome not only has sculpted decorations that are hundreds of years old, but also has an amazing view of the cityscape once you climb to the top.
  • Piazza dei Cavalieri: You'll find plenty of historical buildings at this town square that hosted some of the most powerful rulers and leaders of the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods.
  • Museo di San Matteo: This small museum is home to one of the biggest collections of Tuscan renaissance art found anywhere in the world.
  • Tuttomondo: Located between the train station and Corso Italia, this large mural was painted by world-renowned artist Keith Haring.

If you visit in June, you can watch the fireworks and the more than 10,000 candles that are lit along the Amo during the Luminara Festival, or watch the historical procession in which two sides of the city compete against each other in physical contests during the Gioco del Ponte.

Whether you're looking for a luxury condo in the middle of one of the historical old squares, or a villa with beautiful city views, there's a holiday rental in Pisa that can meet your every need.

Explore all of Pisa and then the rest of the Tuscan region. Travel by train or car to the historic city of Florence, just an hour away from Pisa, or visit the nearby historic towns of Cinque Terre or Volterra during your stay.

For Italian art lovers - Large self-catering apartment in a noble villa
Large apartment in beautiful 17th century house

Italian art lovers is a large apartment in a large 17th century house with amazing frescoes. ( make sure you watch YouTube clip on the house) The house is outside Pisa in a semi rural environment so it it wonderful location to set up base to explore this part of Italy or just stop and enjoy the wonderful spaces and large garden. Donatella and Antonio were wonderful hosts and incredibly helpful. Their recommendations for eating etc were excellent. A highlight is to get them to give you a tour of the rest of the house. We would not hesitate to come back and stay with them. Do not miss staying there if you are visiting that areasee more
Pisa & Lucca - ICONIC LOCATION, Holiday Paradise, Amazing Views, Great Pool! 2
Very relaxing location, with stunning views overlooking Pisa

Would definately recommend if you are looking for a relaxing holiday in a tranquil settings, but only a short drive to Pisa and an hour to Florence. Also had a cookery class and made fresh pasta, with three sauces and homemade tiramisu, the food was fantastic. Great hosts who leave you to it but are in hand if you need any advice or help.see more
The coat of arms. Comfortable self-catering apartment in a historic villa
If you love and appreciate Italian art and architecture then this is the place to be

A fabulous opportunity to step back in time into Italian history. What an amazing place owned by a beautiful lady dedicated to restore her home to show and share the wonders hidden over many years. If you love and appreciate Italian art this is the place to be. Very good location for getting to many of Italy's towns and cities with excellent public transport. Donatella helped us with all the information we needed as well as picking us up from the airport and providing some welcomed goodies. Definitely a place we will return to. One tip take some mosquito repellant!see more
Three centuries of art. Lovely self-catering apartment in historic villa
Beautiful Villa and Excellent hosts!

I would like to recommend Villa Parra and in particular at the "three centuries of art" apartment as my family and I had a very pleasant stay there. Both Donatella and her husband were very kind and helpful and assisted us with any request or need we had and made us feel very welcome. The apartment, which has beautiful view of the mountains around, was very comfortable, very clean and well equipped to the detail. We very much appreciated the books and all the information about the area that they provided and the piano in the living room which my children loved to play. Villa Parra in Navacchio by Pisa airport, is an ideal rural location which is very close to the main Tuscan cities of Pisa and Florence as well as the seaside villages of Tirrenia and Viareggio. We enjoyed our stay so much that we would love to return to Villa Parra were we really felt at home.see more
Lovely, 2 floor Tuscan apartment in central Pisa, sleeps 4
Nice apartment in Pisa

The apartment was central, a ten minute walk from the station and the Piazza del Duomo. It was neat and well-equipped, with everything you need for providing meals at home, but plenty of restuarants nearby. Good firm queen bed upstairs, with plenty of storage space, but we chose to leave our luggage downstairs. Extra blankets and pillows if required. Kitchen, living/dining and bathroom/laundry on ground-floor level. Small but adequate shower with good water pressure. Washing machine easy to operate. Ideal for two adults, second bed is sofa bed downstairs. Giovanni was on site to greet us when we arrived and made us feel very welcome. Recommendedsee more
Flat/apartment Marina di Pisa-200mt from the sea
Wonderful Stay

We were so glad we booked this apartment. It is in a quiet corner of Marina di Pisa but with shops, bus stops, and gelato (yum!) within walking distance. The sea is also very close and although the beach is pebbly it is quiet and sheltered for swimming and there are other sandy beaches just down the coast (but you have to pay). The apartment is clean and recently refurbished and less dated than some you will see. Comfy bed, couches, fitted kitchen, TV, air conditioning, mosquito netted window, power shower, small yard, etc. (no washing machine at this time but there is a launderette around the corner). It is simple and has everything you need, and if you do need anything else Rinaldo is wonderful. He went out and got an ironing board, iron and hair dryer when we asked and had them ready for our arrival. He also supplies a little Italian romance in the form of a bottle of wine. Very nice, approachable guy. It is not a negative, but people with mobility issues should note that the master bed is in the loft space up steep with narrow steps. The sofa can be made into a bed but you would be restricted to downstairs and putting it up and down. Marina di Pisa is peaceful and less used to tourists than Pisa (you may get looks but say hello and thank you and even the guy in Conad supermarket cheers up) but makes a great base for exploration. It has a couple of lovely restaurants. Ten kilometers from Pisa and the bus is easy and frequent. When landing you can get a cheap taxi fare to Pisa bus station from the airport and jump on at stop 2 for Livorno via Marina di Pisa. In fact, Pisa train station is also easy to get to and is good for travel into Florence. We managed two weeks on public transport, saw loads and very few holdups (if you plan to do this too check out the rules, like buying bus tickets at shops and not on bus, validating them on bus, validating your train ticket on the platform, etc.) Plan to go back and split two weeks between relaxation and do a few days driving this time. If you want to head aimlessly inland and see a village, or cruise down the Etruscan coast; a car may be needed. Buon viaggio!see more
