Palheiro Residence - Holiday apartments in Madeira
Beautiful island, very comfortable holiday home, amazing host

There are so many compliments that I could give about the Palheiro Residence! The apartment itself is beautiful. It is furnished and decorated in very good taste and is kept spotless. A cleaning lady came once a week and the towels and bed linen were changed regularly. This house is also very well equipped as there is a TV and stereo in the living room, while in the kitchen there is a nice stove, microwave and all manner of blenders etc. Gerardo even provided hand towels, washing powder for the washing machine and washing up liquid.The apartment is very roomy, there is more that enough space for 4 people and there are also 2 balconies for you to enjoy. One of these looks over a communal garden and the other, which is entered from the master bedroom, looks out on to the city and Caminho do Palheiro itself which can, at times, be busy. The building is about 10 minutes walk from the ocean (15 if you are coming back up the hill) and is at a comfortable distance from the more typically touristy part of Funchal. Gerardo is a fantastic host and did everything in his power to make sure that we were comfortable from the very beginning when I first got in touch with him about renting his apartment, which made the whole process much simpler. He checked on us regularly and even brought us some information regarding things to do in Madeira. On our first evening, he drove us to the supermarket to allow us to do some shopping and took us on a tour of Funchal to help us get used to the area. He also left us a lovely lunch and a traditional Portuguese pie which was very appreciated after the flight. We felt very comfortable with Gerardo as our host and it felt as though we were visiting a close friend rather than renting a holiday apartment. Also, we were very grateful to Gerardo for putting us in touch with Ruben, a taxi driver who speaks very good English and is willing to do tours of the island and levada walks (which are also a great experience) for reasonable prices. If you are still undecided, please note, that Madeira is a beautiful island with a variety of activities that suit many types of people. You can go hiking, you can relax in a park, you can go dolphin watching (which I would recommend) or you can spend a day at the beach (although, be aware that they are not sandy beaches as this is a volcanic island. Rather, they are pebbly and there are some concrete platforms where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas, however these are also good fun, have lifeguards and allow for both swimming and paddling).
