Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, Milan
Known as the Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, the church is now the Archaeological Museum of Milan. This magnificent church once housed the most eminent convent of the Benedictine order.
Construction commenced in 1503 of part of the Great Monastery and spanned almost four centuries, only being officially completed in 1896. But such antiquity is not the only appeal. This is where some of Milans greatest artistic treasures are found and a magnificent array of frescoes, including the famous works by Leonardo da Vincis student, Bernardino Luini.
Frescoes were a family affair for Luini: the works of his sons hang in the Bergamina Chapel, with the much-celebrated Adoration of the Magi taking pride of place on the partition wall. Youll also be left in awe by the 16th century organ in the hall of nuns that was constructed by Gian Giacomo Antegnati and has a case painted in tempera by Francesco and Girolamo de'Medici da Seregno.
