About Ixtapa, Guerrero

Ixtapa was once a royal playground for a king, his wives and entourage. The king had a breakwater constructed, so that his wives could bathe in safety, and part of this can still be seen at Las Gatas beach.

From the 16th century onwards, many pirates and buccaneers used the bay as safe haven in bad weather, so it has a romantic past!

If you're hungry, you’d better like fish and seafood as they feature in many meals in Ixtapa. After all, it is a fishing town! Pozole, a traditional soup, is eaten on Thursdays. Try refreshing hibiscus water and the juicy mangoes that are produced in the area around Ixtapa.

Ixtapa is a perfect destination if you want to sunbathe and swim. Head to Las Gatas beach for the best spot.

What to do in Ixtapa

There are a plethora of exciting activities awaiting you in Ixtapa. There are Eco tours, bike tours, nature and wildlife tours, kayaking and canoeing, to name but a few.

If you have kids, they will love the Magic World Aquatic Park and the mini golf course, Golfito Ixtapa. These two attractions alone are sure to fill your time with lots of fun!

Visit the archaeological site of Xihuacan, which has only recently been excavated. There's an onsite museum so that you can learn about the history and culture of the Pre-Columbian era. When you have had your fill of history, you can relax beside a beautiful lagoon.

If you enjoy walking and hiking, take the trail at Ciclopista de Ixtapa and see the wildlife. If you're a fan of the water, take a boat to Ixtapa island for safe swimming and snorkelling. It’s easy to catch a boat from Playa Linda.

For the perfect end to a day, watch the sunset from Playa el Palmar or have a massage in the massage hut. The sand at this stunning beach is wonderfully soft under your toes!

Top travel tips for Ixtapa

Catch a local bus from Ixatapa to Zihuatanejo. These also go to a few beaches so you can explore lots of different destinations during your stay. Buses run from 6am until 11pm so you can watch the sun rise and set over the water.

You can rent a bicycle, scooter or car if you want to. If you want to rent a car, it’s best to do so at the airport.

Make sure you always have enough small change for tips - it’s a good idea to stock up on small amounts of pesos before you go. If you are having a buffet meal, you don't leave a big tip. If you dine à la carte, leave between 20 and 50 pesos. Tip maids and bellboys who carry luggage. It’s a small way to make your stay much more enjoyable.
