Mother Shipton s Cave and The Petrifying Wel, Harrogate
Dating back to 1630, Mother Shiptons Cave and Petrifying Well is England's oldest tourist attraction. Mother Shipton was a witch who prophesied the future, and her predictions made her famous.
Mother Shipton was born inside the cave in 1488. Over the years she made predictions about some of historys biggest events with an uncanny degree of accuracy. She predicted the fates of kings, the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
The Petrifying Well traditionally put fear into the hearts of superstitious townsfolk, who thought the water turned things into stone. And they were (partly) right: teddy bears dangled into the water become coated in mineral deposits within a few months.
