Guildford Castle was a military keep built by the Normans shortly after the conquest of 1066 and was later updated to become Henry IIIs hunting castle. It fell into disrepair after the 13th century but has recently been partially restored so that you can climb the tower and look out over the countryside.
Stroll through the castle gardens to see the colourful flower beds and the life-sized statue of Alice Through the Looking Glass, commemorating Lewis Carrolls time here. The gardens also have a Victorian band stand, the towns war memorial and an open-air theatre for summer performances. A one-minute walk from the High Street, this is a lovely place to bring a picnic or enjoy one of the summer concerts.
While in the area visit Loseley House, the peaceful yellow-stone mansion with a Gertrude Jekyll-designed walled garden and Hatchlands Park to see pianos played by Chopin and Marie Antoinette. Or visit Polesden Lacey to see the gilded salon where royals used to gather for tea.
