Oh dear. After many years of almost exclusively wonderful and appreciative guests, our first negative review. The whole experience with this lady was very negative from before she even arrived. She mistakenly thought she had booked a completely different property, advertised on the same site and shortly after booking sent me a frosty email wanting to know why I was asking for payment for a stay at my property when it was not the once she had booked. She subsequently realized her mistake but it appears never got the photos and impression given by the other place out of her mind. The stately chateau she thought she had booked is more than twice the price of our chateau and looks much more formal, describing itself as opulent, with specially commissioned oriental furnishings. It is clearly aimed at a completely different market to our relaxed family-friendly rustic country chateau – which cost her less than £19 per person per night.
Despite being given the usual champagne on arrival, a generous gift pack, toiletries and dressing gowns which you don't often get with a self-catering rental, soon after she arrived she complained that she would not be getting a daily maid service as she wrongly believed this was also included in the price. It clearly states in our literature that daily maid service is available but as an optional extra for an additional charge. We go to great pains to very accurately describe the property and surroundings in our promotional material and there is not one factual inaccuracy, and of course all of our photos are genuine – some we use were even taken by guests and sent to us – how photographs can be described as misleading is puzzling to say the least.
We specifically say that the furniture is sourced at local antique shops and brocantes and some naturally will have imperfections consistent with age. It would be so wrong to fill the place with High Street furniture! The only furniture she complained about were a set of 6 antique dining chairs we bought only three weeks before – then offered to sell me 6 chairs she had for €1800!
It's totally untrue to say the pool was not working for the whole week – the pool was available for their use and cleaned as usual every day but she had been forewarned that we had a problem with the heater in advance of her stay (which incidentally was fixed during her stay) and she accepted complimentary extras worth more than €300 as compensation. We even gave her the daily maid service she complained about not having as a further gesture of goodwill which would normally have cost more than €150.
There is no problem with our wi-fi, nor is there a problem with our central heating system. There was a powercut on one of the days she was in residence so our handyman was called to reset the heating and wi-fi which were restored when the power came back.
The only issue with the plumbing is that French outpipes are quite narrow so when guests use the powerful multi-jet shower units, showers cannot be too long otherwise the outpipes can't cope with the volume of water. Again, guests are made aware of this and most are grateful to have the powerful showers.
As for the comments regarding the cottage, there are very effective electric wall heaters in every room and as it is recently renovated it is very well insulated so retains heat beautifully. The bunk beds have always been advertised as children's bunk beds and were never designed for adults to sleep in. The guests who stayed in the cottage immediately after these guests reported having a lovely stay.
In a place this size we can never guarantee that everything will work perfectly all of the time, but we do guarantee our best endeavours to get things fixed as fast as possible when things do go wrong and we are lucky enough to have a fantastic team locally who just that.
However, it's clear that you can't please all of the people all of the time and it's very upsetting that this lady was so unhappy. If you are looking for a very formal and opulent palace-like chateau, brimming with priceless antiques, this is not the place for you. If, however, you are looking for a relaxed and welcoming place, full of character and in beautiful surroundings, then we hope you will come and experience our warm welcome.
Everyone is welcome to inspect the place before they book and we urge anyone in doubt to come and see it for themselves. From now on we won't be shy and will ask our happy guests to post reviews!
