At a stunning 162 metres tall, Beachy Head is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain. The century-old Beachy Head Lighthouse below is an evocative reminder of the times time when the red and white stripes were needed for safe navigation. Today, though, the stripes are merely decorative.
While youre there, you can stop at the visitor centre and learn about the local history; this includes Parson Darbys life-saving work, smugglers nefarious deeds and the recent loss of the Devils Chimney chalk tower. If you feel like a short walk, why not start at the village of East Dean, where Sherlock Holmes retired? A hot chocolate in the nearby cafe is a nice finish to a blustery day.
Other destinations in the area include Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters, also part of the chalky coastline. After a full day of walking, relax and enjoy a show at the towns Royal Hippodrome Theatre.
