Gijon holidays
This coastal city in the northern region of Asturias is an ideal holiday destination. Located on the Bay of Biscay, it’s been described as a quieter and quainter version of San Sebastian. The city
When exploring the city, you won’t want to miss the pretty stone archways of the Plaza Mayor or the battlements of the Palacio de Revillagigedo. You’ll find the city unfolds in a series of beautiful squares, revealing more and more magnificent churches and municipal buildings. It has a pretty harbour, too, with beautiful buildings lining the seafront promenade and boats bobbing up and down on the water.
Beaches
The Playa de San Lorenzo is Gijón’s most popular beach and it’s not difficult to see why: gentle waves, a crescent of soft sand and a beautiful setting in the sheltered bay. It’s also ideal for families looking to relax with peace of mind as the beach has both lifeguards and medics. Another beach to try is Playa de Poniente. While it has slightly less sand than San Lorenzo, it has just as much charm.
If you find you want a break from the beach (unlikely), then a short walk to will take you to Eduardo Chillida’s famous sculpture Eulogy to the Horizon. Other nearby sculptures include the Monumento a la Madre del Emigrante, a poignant figure standing on the coast.
Natural beauty
Gijón is also home to several nature parks, including the Isabel la Católica. This centrally-located, verdant wonderland has ponds, birdlife (including peacocks and emus), statues, and beautifully maintained walkways to stroll along. Another park, La Providencia, offers arguably the best views of the coast and city.

Gijón Aquarium will delight little ones and grown-ups alike with its resident sharks, otters and penguins. It’s home to over 5000 marine species and has attractions like ‘touch pools’ where you’re able to see and feel the sea creatures up close.
An International Film Festival takes place in Gijón each November while in February, the streets are buzzing for the city’s carnaval. Asturias is famous for them, but Gijón’s is often said to be the most exciting. But rest assured: whatever time of year you choose to visit, you’ll find a warm welcome in Gijón.
