Aix-en-Provence holidays

Aix-en-Provence, France

With its lavender fields, cobbled streets and historic buildings, it’s easy to see why Aix-en-Provence has become one of the South of France’s most popular destinations. After all, it’s renowned for its shops, café culture and art scene, and Cézanne lived and worked here!

With hundreds of rentals in Aix-en-Provence to choose from on Holiday Lettings, you could relax poolside at your very own 18th-century villa, or enjoy being in the heart of the old town in a cosy, romantic apartment for two.

About Aix-en-Provence

The town’s student population gives it a lively feel, yet Aix retains its rich history, with 17th and 18th century palaces, cathedrals and fountains around every corner.

Walking remains the best way to explore everything Aix-en-Provence has to offer, but there’s a reliable bus service, too, if you want to explore further, and renting a bicycle is a great move.

Though the official language here is French, you’ll find most people speak a good level of English, although making the effort to order in French will always earn you an appreciative smile.

What to do

Aix-en-Provence is packed with art and culture and was once home to Paul Cézanne. Why not visit Atelier Cezanne, his last studio, or check out his work at the Musée Granet? One of France’s must-see museums, it’s home to works by Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh and Cézanne, housed in a stunning 17th-century priory.

Also worth visiting is the Caumont Centre d’Art, which holds three exhibitions a year in the Hotel Particulier, once owned by the Marquise de Caumont.

No trip to Aix-en-Provence is complete without doing as the locals do, and enjoying an espresso or pastis (aniseed liqueur) at a pavement café, watching the world go by. Pop into Farinoman Fou bakery, where you can pick up some delicious artisanal bread – just be prepared to queue!

Foodies should make time to sample Calissons, a local speciality of candied fruits and ground almonds, topped with icing.

Top Aix-en-Provence travel tips

Aix old town is part-pedestrianised, so renting an electric bike from the shop opposite the station is a great way to get around. Ask nicely and they'll even provide you with a mapped itinerary!

The best time to visit is the spring (March-May) when the days are long and sunny, and the streets are less crowded with Parisian visitors than during the summer months. Come in June if you want to see Aix’s famous lavender fields.

Or visit in July to see the Opera Festival, one of the largest in Europe, held at the grand Archbishop’s Palace.

Whether you want to spend your trip shopping, dining out or soaking up the local history, you’ll find Aix-en-Provence has something for everyone, and you’ll be sure to discover the perfect property on Holiday Lettings!

Beautiful Spacious House in Lovely Provence Countryside

The house is in a quiet and private setting surrounded by beautiful countryside that you can walk in directly from the house. It is very well equipped for both indoor and alfresco living. La Désirade
Idyllic place to stay

We had a wonderful time at La Desirade. Jocelyn and Renee were so friendly and helpful, sorting any problems 9which were very minor), immediately. Although they live in the same grounds, they are not at all intrusive. We would love go back when the work on the new tram line in Aix is finished. Lots of lovely places to visit in the surrounding area.see more
Stone mas Aix-en-Provence calm: 5 bedrooms, large garden, heated swimming pool
Wonderful place, highly recommended

We had a fantastic holiday staying at the beautiful Mas la Sauterelle. There were eight adults and two babies, it was our first family holiday in years and it couldn't have been a better choice. The Mas is a stunning place, recently renovated but maintaining its characterful features, and it was very spacious with something for everyone. There were numerous areas to spend together as a family or simply wander off to relax on your own. We loved the kitchen diner area; one of our group commented that cooking had never been so fun! Lots of fantastic appliances, equipment and utensils. The pool is great and there's an outbuilding full of lilos and inflatables for the kids. There's also badminton, ping pong, a soccer or water polo net, and much more to keep everyone entertained. The boys also enjoyed the pool table room. The bedrooms are excellent and the beds are very, very cosy and comfortable. The Mas is around 3-4 minutes from the nearest town of Venelles where there's a mid-size supermarket which suited our needs, and there's a lovely bakery called Boulangerie de Marie Blachère where we got fresh bread and croissants most mornings, the staff were lovely. We ventured out to Cassis for a day (30-40 mins away) and also spent a couple of days in the old town of Aix-en-Provence (15 mins away) which we loved. Big big thank you to Eric and Laure for their help and allowing us to stay in this wonderful place, we will be back in the future!see more

Sample Mediterranean life-style in beautiful historic town

Two weeks in Provnce. Not long enough! This is the perfect way to sample Medieterranean life-style. The apartment is generously proportioned, bright, very comfortable and perfectly located in the heart of Aix-en-Provence. The town is very beautiful, lively, and very interesting. Food is simply fantastic. Among the best market stalls in Southern France, it is a joy to shop every day and cook with wonderful ingredients. But not every day, there are plenty of fantastic restaurants, from simple traditional eateries to Michelin starred gateonomic restaurants. And leave room for Bechard's superb pastries, brioche, and cakes. And just along the road real coffee! Go to Manna Espresso easily the best coffee you will find in Aix (and almost anywhere else), lovingly made with impressive expertise, and fresh milk rather than the ubiquitous UHT. If you are lucky enough to to be able to go in September, so much the better. A little cooler, but incredibly sunny. So getting out and about is more comfortable, and lots of tempting outings, from walking in the steps of Cezanne, to big art and museum days in Marseille. It is hard to think how this could be improved. Magali is very helpful, the whole operation well organised and professional.see more
