About Aguadilla

Founded in 1775 by Luis de Córdova, it actually wasn't until 1780 that Aguadilla's founding was made official. Once a part of the territory of Aguada, the town has several names to it.

Known as the "village of the eye of the water” (La Vida del Ojo de Agua), and more recently "the new garden of the Atlantic" (El Nuevo Jardín del Atlánticoit) is easy to see why the town has these names – its stunning presence on the Atlantic coast.

Aguadilla has the greatest number of beaches in Puerto Rico! You'll be able to snorkel amongst coral reefs and witness beautiful views, as well as take the opportunity to try some water sports.

Puerto Rico has Taíno Indian, Spanish and African influences, which are particularly seen in the local cuisine. Pop on over to Desecheo Restaurant to try some authentic Puerto Rican cuisine including mofongo - a mixture of fried mashed green plantain, mashed garlic and small pieces of chicharrón (deep-fried pork skin).

What to do in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico

Aguadilla is perhaps best known for its beaches with Crashboat Beach being the most popular. You'll be able to take surfing lessons here, which are ideal for a beginner, intermediate or advanced level.

It is also home to the Caribbean's only ice skating rink! If you feel a bit overheated in the traditionally tropical temperatures, then be sure to check out this out.

There is also Parque Acuático Las Cascadas, the biggest water theme park in the Caribbean. There's nothing better than spending a hot day at a water park!

For some history, visit Ojo de Agua, "water eye", which was once the underground fresh water source of Taino Indians and European seamen for centuries.

Another place of interest is the Punta Borinquen Lighthouse, which served as an aid to navigation on the route from Europe to Panama and is the perfect spot for photographers for its spectacular views.

Top travel tips for Aguadilla

Walking around will allow you to really soak up the vibes of Aguadilla. Renting a car is perhaps the most efficient way to get around.

However, if you do plan to take the públicos (public buses), then it would be helpful to learn some basic Spanish to spea to the drivers - not many of them can speak English! Your time in Aguadilla would be the perfect time to practise and really experience your surroundings as authentically as possible.
