Western Cape holidays

The long stretches of secluded coastline and unexploited fishing villages of South Africa's Western Cape are still considered a kind of local secret. If you travel here, you may feel as if you've discovered something that international tourists have not yet found out about. Take a tour through the heart of Cape Town by foot or by bicycle, and then explore some of the Western Cape's World Heritage Sites and national parks. While you are here, visit a refuge and education centre to learn more about eagles or Africa's large cat species, take a shark diving excursion in Gansbaai, and see the historic prison of Nelson Mandela on Robben Island. And at the end of a long sojourn of hiking, biking, exploring the coast, whale watching, and learning about South Africa's complex history, come back to Cape Town to experience the restaurants and theatres of the Victoria and Albert Waterfront.

Here are a few additional suggestions of things to do in the area:

  • Hike up Table Mountain: This is a brilliant way to experience the breathtaking scenery of South Africa.
  • Take a culinary and winery tour: Sample the best cuisine of world-class western cape restaurants while exploring the internationally known Franschhoek, Paarl, and Stellenbosch wine lands.
  • Visit the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens: Come to these botanical gardens during the spring and summer to experience a dazzling array of native plants in full bloom and learn more about the natural history of the Western Cape area.
  • Visit the Knysna Elephant Park: Located between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, this wildlife park offers an opportunity for close contact with protected resident elephants. Also be sure to visit the Elephant Sanctuary at the Crags.
  • Travel the Swartberg Pass: Take a scenic drive along the unforgettable Swartberg Pass, a stretch of road recognised as a World Heritage Site.
  • Boulders Beach: This is a wonderful place to have a look at the famous penguins of Cape Town.

Luckily, there are plenty of holiday rentals available in Cape Town, during every season of the year. For your next getaway, book a beautiful and affordable condo near Eland's Bay or Lambert's Bay, which provide access to some of the most important sites in the Cape area.

Mutti's Cottage @ 8A Stirrup Lane
Perfect cottage for a relaxing stay, with an amazing pool and wonderful mountain views.

Mutti's Cottage in the grounds of Ashley's and Debbie's beautiful house was well equipped and peaceful with an amazing pool. The whole family were welcoming and helpful, with nothing too much trouble for them to make our stay enjoyable. Harry, their poodle was a delight! Both their staff were happy and friendly and did their jobs well. A car was essential for us to get around but access to Hout Bay and surrounding areas was easy. We really enjoyed our stay - excellent in all areas. We will be recommending Mutti's Cottage to all our friends!see more
Self catering apartment - Simons Town
Well equipped,clean and good value.

A very nice studio flat near to lots of scenic and interesting places, not to mention the nearby penguins and Simonstown. We are very pleased with everything supplied and Shaun Butler the landlord has ensured we have everything we need for a relaxing and secure stay....including a car parking space. … see more

Beautiful garden, privacy, luxury, central position, bright & clean
Wonderful stay!

My family and I (2 adults, 1 older child and 2 young teenagers) visited this place over the Easter holidays (April) and we had a wonderful stay. The house was like a home from home! The owners were amazing and couldn’t do enough to make our stay as pleasant as possible. They were extremely friendly and welcoming but not intrusive. The property itself was very clean, spacious and well appointed. The kitchen had everything you needed and we ate in several times. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms great (good showers!). The location is great if you want to be slightly outside of town and the busyness of the cars and crowds however it’s only a very short drive into Cape Town and the attractions. There were some lovely wineries and restaurants nearby too. The garden is immaculate and beautiful with amazing plants and flowers. It’s like a mini Chelsea flower show! The swimming pool is clean and we braved it in April weather. Lastly, on our last day we planned a nice late brunch at one of the local eateries but hadn’t realised the Cape Town marathon was planned to run through the area we were staying at! So on our way back to collect our luggage we got caught in the chaos and couldn’t physically reach the property by car! Panicking that we might miss our flight we called Jean (owner) to ask what we should do. Jean was a superstar and managed to collect all of our luggage and drive to meet us just outside of the marathon route...we could thank her enough as this really saved us!! I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. Thanks again for making our stay so wonderful.see more
Groot Constantia Villa
Wonderful location, stunning home and warm and welcoming hosts

The location of this Villa is absolutely perfect for visiting Cape Town and it's attractions. Gorgeous location and spectacular views. The house is very well equipped, spacious and can accommodate large families easily and comfortably. The pool area and outdoor eating are is just lovely, with a pizza oven and braii. We felt very secure during out stay. The house itself is situated on the doorstep of Groot Constantia vineyards, the walk through to the Wine Estate is just stunning, a real gem. There is a fab shopping village just a few minutes away with some lovely shops, restaurants and supermarket. Dennis and Elizabeth were wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome right from the offset. Vanessa and Kryford who looked after the house while we stayed are a pleasure I would absolutely recommend a stay here and we would visit again in a heartbeat!see more
BNB in Constantia Cape Town
Hidden Gem

Self contained cottage within grounds of larger property. This didn't deter from complete privacy of cottage. Great location in Constantia with easy access to Cape Town and coastal towns as well as restaurants and wine estates. Cottage well appointed, spotlessly clean with kitchen and dining provision. Small private garden and use of owners pool. Sunloungers and Braai available.see more
