Umbria holidays

Tucked away in central Italy, Umbria is one of the country's smallest regions in terms of population, but what it lacks in people it makes up for in charm. Scenic and welcoming with a rich artistic and cultural heritage, Umbria is home to some of the country's most underrated towns and attractions. If you're looking for a unique and genuine Italian holiday experience, Umbria fits the bill perfectly.

Some of the top attractions in Umbria include:

  • Perugia: Umbria's friendly and lively capital is a vibrant and enjoyable place to visit, with a palpable joie de vivre at every turn. Perugia is also home to a remarkably well-preserved medieval old town.
  • Assisi: The birthplace of St. Francis, Assisi is best-known today for housing one of the world's most impressive assemblages of medieval art. Visit the city's Basilica to see an astonishing collection of frescoes.
  • Castiglione del Lago: Wonderful restaurants make this small lakeside community well worth a visit. Bring your camera and prepare to lose your heart to the placid charms of this picturesque town.
  • Outdoor exploration: Umbria walking tours are very rewarding for visitors, and cycling in Umbria is a delight during the warmer seasons. You can also enjoy hiking in Umbria in any of the many regional and national parks and nature preserves.
  • Vineyards and wineries: There are many vineyards and wineries in the region that offer tours, but one of the most noteworthy is Cantina di Girasole, near the border of Tuscany.

If you're in Umbria in late May or early June, be sure to head to Spello for the Infiorata flower festival. Held 60 days after Easter to celebrate the ascension of the risen Christ, this pageantry of this event is not to be missed even if you're not Catholic.

For your stay in Umbria, a holiday rental makes the ideal accommodation. No other option gives you such an authentic and homely taste of Italian life, and options in all budget ranges are plentiful throughout Umbria's beautiful towns and cities. holiday rentals are perfect whether you're enjoying a romantic getaway, on holiday with your family, or travelling with a group of friends.

If you want to see more of Italy, Umbria's central location makes it easy to move on to further adventures. The region of Lazio, home to the capital city of Rome, borders Umbria, as do the beautiful coastal regions of Marche, Abruzzo and Tuscany.

La Palazzina, restored farmhouse with private pool and spectacular views
Wonderful house with amazing pool and spectacular sunsets

We spent the most beautiful holiday we could imagine in this house, and found everything to be perfect. The pool is really big and very nice with a deeper area to plunge and swim. The house remains fresh during the day and the fact that it is located on a hill provides for fresh evenings and nights which is very welcome after visiting the many places to see in Umbria. Tuscany is not far either with one hour and 15 minutes drive for Sienna. The house is located on private grounds at 10-15 minutes drive from Umbertide, but the landscapes, the little breeze on the hill and the absolute quietness surrounding the house are really worth the drive. The kitchen is very well equipped and we enjoyed eating on three terraces of the house, and particularly on the one next to the pool which is always in the shadow thanks to the beautiful wisteria which climbs on the pergola. We also enjoyed very much the fact that the house is decorated with a lot of love and taste, with high quality furniture. You feel really at home and not in an anonymous vacation rental. The communication with the land lady and the local assistance was always easy as they both speak English. We will certainly recommend the house to our friends. Thank you Vicky for all your kindness and care !see more
Old tower with garden and private pool walking distance from village
Beautiful, intriguing house and fantastic agent

Torre Olivara is the most amazing property. It is inside the walls of the old village of Otricoli and yet only a few minutes walk to the newer part with its good restaurants and a few shops. Inside the walls life seems much slower and almost belonging to a time gone by. The residents all seem to know each other, they fetch out their chairs and sit in the street late into the evenings chatting, the butcher throws scraps to the neighbourhood cats and you get drinking water from the standing taps dotted around the streets. The views are spectacular, both of the Umbrian countryside surrounding the village, and the ages old, higgledy piggledy houses, streets and courtyards within it. There are few cars, the streets are so narrow, and hardly any noise other than the church clocks chiming. The house itself is ancient and absolutely unique. It has clearly been a family home for generations and is much loved and cared for. Each room has something special about it, something quirky, from the amazing kitchen incorporating the old olive presses, to the huge lounge with its hand painted ceiling, the master bedroom with its stone arched window with the most unbelievable view, to the wooden staircases, with large landings, windows and balconies. Then there is the large garden on different levels, with hideaways dotted about and the welcome pool area. On a practical level, it is well maintained inside and out. Much of the kitchen equipment, of which there was plenty, including the oven and washing machine were virtually new - the ironing board hadn't even been unwrapped! Everything was very clean and uselful little extras, such as a few dishwasher tablets/washing machine capsules, and toiletries and toilet rolls, were provided which was very helpful. The garden is also well maintained, with lots of new beds recently made and planting taking place, and the pool was checked and cleaned every day or two. I have to say I would be wary about taking young children or those with mobility issues here. It is a tower house after all, so there are lots and lots of stairs, and the garden too is on a slope. Its also not for people who want lot of nightlife and bustle! About the only thing we felt we were missing was some form of shade at the pool area. It did mean that our time there was restricted to after 4pm because there was no escape from the sun. One of the best things about this house was the people running it. Guido was extremely helpful when ever I emailed him with queries, but I really want to praise Mia, our contact from the agency, who has to be the kindest, most helpful most organised and diligent agent we have ever had. She contacted me by whatsapp before we even left for our holiday, and offered me suggestions for our stay in Rome, she met us at the village square on arrival to help us with parking as the roads are so very narrow parking outside the house wasn't possible for us. Any queries I had I could go to her at any time and she even booked us a table for our first night at the village when my attempt at Italian had not been understood. At one point we had an issue with a next door roof tile, and our tv, and Mia had someone out to sort both matters the same day. Brilliant! She clearly loves the house very much and is really happy to share her enthusiasm for it with others. Thank you Mia, so much. You made our holiday extra special!see more
On Its own hill. Villa Le Tre Vi. Authentic stone built Italian country villa.
Stunning villa

Villa le Tre Vi is undoubtedly one of the best if not the best holiday villa we have ever found. The owners are both architects and they have lovingly and beautifully restored it to make a stunning welcoming place to stay. We have been to the region many times but never stumbled upon this particular beautiful spot; the villa is perfectly located to visit many of the beautiful towns and villages of the area, and the village is super handy for basic provisions, as well as a great butcher (also sells wine!) and pizzeria. The house is beautifully set up (we were three families with two rooms each), lovely comfy beds, there is loads of living space, great bathrooms and it is very child friendly despite being so beautifully done up- cots and an extra high chair were magicked up efficiently when we requested them. The kitchen is fantastic too- one of the best provisioned we have ever come across. Outside there are glorious views, and a plethora of lovely places to sit and enjoy them in the stunningly designed and maintained gardens. The pool is gorgeous, with umbrellas and shade for kids (the lack of pool fence wasn't as issue for us as there was so much space to sit and relax there was always an adult willing to be on 'duty'). The owners are extremely friendly and responsive and willing to help, and provide lovely suggestions of local things to do and eat! The lady who manages it for them lives in the village and is wonderful too - always available and helpful (and speaks perfect English). The only issue we had was a couple of evening power cuts (which I think come with the Italian / local territory!) but there were plenty of candles and Stefania always came straight away to help locate fuse boxes etc. (There were also a lot of mosquitos when we were there in August, especially at sunset, but only outside as there are efficient mosquito screens in the house, and again candles and spray are provided- you may need to replenish supplies though!) We had a wonderful time in a beautiful place and feel very lucky to have found it- hopefully others will enjoy it as much as we did.see more
Villa with private pool, air conditioning, 20km Todi & Montignano, 40 Orvieto
lovely house and location

We stayed in this villa in 2017 and had such a lovely time we always wanted to return. The house is well equipped and has a private pool and the air conditioning in the bedrooms is worth paying the extra for if visiting over the summer months. The house is well placed to visit local towns such as Todi and Orvieto and it is easy to catch a train to Rome if you want to go to the city. The local village is 15 mins walk away and is so friendly with great places to have a coffee and ice cream, restaurants and a good small supermarket.see more
Villa L'Antica Vetreria
Our Italian Home

That's what it feels like when we return. Home. This was our 4th stay and each was enchanting. La Cantina a two story unit overlooking farmland in the surrounding countryside. beautiful views greet you when you awake. A short walk and you are at Echoes. Espresso, pastry, prosecco, panini right on the village square. In the evening there is a delightful restaurant. Or you can take advantage of cooking classes right in your own apartment. The Tuesday wine tour is not to be missed. Blending a history lesson with a wine tasting. Later lunch in a hilltop village. A dip in the pool ends this memorable day. There are many day trips, Orvieto, Perugia, Arrezo, Assisi. Take a little longer and visit Florence. Your hosts Colleen and Tom make sure this will be a trip to remember.see more
Wonderful Views, 16m x 6m Saline heated private pool, comfy areas for relaxation
Molto bello

This is a great house, the layout of the villa flows very easily with outdoor sitting area leading into indoor sitting area and then more relaxing areas on the lower floor. Everything was very easy to use with no complicated frills, clean lines yet really comfortable and beautiful. The directions to the property were perfect and the caretakers of the villa were lovely with the owners also at hand if required. Getting up the first morning and sitting in the sunshine looking down the valley was just amazing, we have been to some stunning locations but the views from this place are some of the best we have ever seen. The house is close to a good but not busy road, then up a little back road, so not far but far enough for it to be quiet and peaceful. Perfect for relaxation but not so difficult to go and see the sights and easy to get to some really nice local restaurants. The pool is superb, like the house with simple clean lines but is very very large so you can really swim and the saline water was just lovely and the fact that it was heated was perfect as we came in mid September. Worked brilliantly for all of us and in fact it is one of the best houses we have been to perfect combination between seclusion yet good access to great sights. We will certainly be back!see more
