Nullarbor Links: world's biggest golf course to open in Australia

The biggest golf course in the world is to open in Australia later this year. Nullarbor Links stretches 848 miles and crosses two time zones.

Nullarbor Links covers approximately the same distance as Land's End to John O'Groats, according to The Daily Telegraph. Spanning two states, the golf course is so big that players will have to drive between the holes. The course runs between Ceduna in the south to Kalgoorlie in western Australia.

Keen golfers renting Australia holiday homes are likely to encounter kangaroos, emus, snakes and bush turkeys on their way round the course. The idea is to give tourists a taste of "the real Australia".

"There's some absolutely amazing scenery out there," said Alf Caputo, who managed the construction of the course. "Before Nullarbor Links there was no magnet to bring people out there to have a look at these beautiful things."

The course, which has taken five years to construct, includes some unusual sights. "One of the holes is right smack bang in the middle of a sheep station," Caputo added. "There's also a wheat farming area - people will never have seen anything like it."

It is thought it will take between three days to one week to complete. The holes are between 45 minutes and two and a half hours drive apart.

Construction on the course is due to finish next month and the first tournament will be played in October. Caputo is confident that the course will impress visitors: "It's not just a game of golf. It's a true Australian experience."
