Moscow is expecting to beat its tourism targets, according to new figures from 2006.The Moscow Committee for Tourism said that its target of five million visitors to the city by 2010 would easily be broken.
The Russian capital attracted 3.5 million visitors in 2005 and last year the number of visitors across a nine month period grew by 6.5 per cent.
Overall the city is attracting an annual growth in tourism of between 200,000 and 500,000 visitors a year.
Head of the Moscow Committee for Tourism Grigory Antyufeyev said in a statement: "Moscow is prepared for the role of a site through which foreign tourists will start exploring all Russia."
Mr Antyufeyev added that the Pancake Festival, held annually on Vasilyevsky in the Red Square, was among the city's draws.
Germany, the US, Turkey, France, UK, Italy, China, Israel, Japan and Spain are currently the key providers of tourists to Moscow.
