Tourists 'looking for healthy holidays'
UK tourists are increasingly interested in sports and activity-based holidays, one expert has claimed.Derek Moore, chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators, explained that people are now less likely to want to sun themselves on a beach than in the past.
He said: "There's a huge range of activity-based holidays - from just north of couch potato - such as cycling in the relatively flat Loire Valley - to seriously hairy-legged options such as climbing Kilimanjaro's 19,340 feet or tackling Everest Base Camp."
Less extreme options also exist, with golf, tennis, football and canoeing being just some examples of popular sporting holidays, he added.
The rise in popularity of such holidays is linked to the fact that people are now more aware than ever of health issues, Mr Moore concluded.
In related news, the Office of National Statistics Social Trends survey for 2008 found that 25 per cent of adults in the UK are currently members of a sports club.
