Writing for the Guardian, Benji Lanyado, gave his top five tips for those looking for a low-cost getaway - with some of the destinations being closer than would-be tourists might imagine.

The Baltic Coast of Poland is his top choice, although he points out that travellers will have to hurry as the country is obligated to adopt the euro at some point in the future.

For those who fancy something a bit different, rural Iceland should offer visitors plenty of opportunity to explore out-of-the-way places, Mr Lanyado added.

He explained that while the country is traditionally expensive, the krona has fallen in value recently.

"In short, there's never been a better time to visit, and you'll be doing their economy a favour whilst you're at it," Mr Lanyado said.

Albania, Turkey and Egypt make up the rest of his top five.

Those looking to save money on their trips abroad might want to choose a self-catering holiday.

Earlier this week, a spokesperson for the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) claimed such breaks are perfect for families as they offer a degree of flexibility.
