The Lake District 'is more beautiful than the Himalayas'
The natural beauty of the Lake District surpasses even that of the Himalayas, one adventurer believes.Writing for the Independent, mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington states that while he has travelled far and wide, his heart still belongs to the north-west of
England.
He said: "I've seen many magnificent views in my lifetime - the Himalayas, Arctic
Norway, parts of South America - but I've never seen anywhere more beautiful than the Lake District.
"What's so special is that this remarkable landscape is packed into a very, very small area."
Despite this compact setting, the Lake District still manages to have a huge variety of scenery, with each valley having its own character, he added.
The area makes for a great holiday destination no matter the season, he concluded.
Sir Chris, now 73, has been mountaineering since the age of 16 and has climbed the highest active volcano in the world, Sangay in Ecuador. He was knighted for his services to the sport in 1996.
