The high street is not always fashionable- 58 per cent of Britons book holidays online
Once the obvious choice for booking a family holiday, the high street travel agent is falling out of fashion, if new figures are anything to go by. According to the findings of a new survey, TravelMole.com reports that only 20 per cent of holidaymakers now make their way to the travel agents to book their break. However, the high street’s loss is the Internet’s gain. The comprehensive survey by Ciao Surveys revealed that 58 per cent of us prefer to make our travel arrangements online, compared to just 20.7 per cent going through a travel agency.
The poll into Britons’ holiday habits also sheds light on our activities away from home soil; over half of UK citizens (58.5 per cent) take one to two holidays abroad per year. The figures suggest that we aspire to be a jet-setting nation, with almost a quarter of respondents (24.8 per cent) stating that they had their eyes set on
Australia and just under 20 per cent hoping to make it to North America. Yet others are content to explore closer to home, as 18.3 per cent said they would most like to visit Europe.
Relaxation and sun seem to be the mainstays of a good holiday, with UK citizens citing these as their top priorities when choosing a holiday destination. In fact, seaside holidays are still a dream break for many; whether it’s bronzing oneself on a Bermudan beach, or sailing round the
Greek islands, sun, sea and sand still prove the ultimate combination.
Nevertheless, a holiday in the eyes of the majority of Britons is not just about getting a tan; adventure and nightlife also ranked highly in the list of priorities, with more than 14 per cent of British holidaymakers going the whole hog and seeking life changing experiences as part of their holiday.
There were, however, some holiday ideas seemed too much like hard work; just 4.9 per cent of those surveyed expressed a desire to trek in the Himalayas, much preferring to shop until they drop in New York instead (13. 9 per cent).
The study was based on 1,005 adults across the UK.
