Spending money 'goes further on long-haul holidays'

Spending money 'goes further on long-haul holidays'
Spending money 'goes further on long-haul holidays'Tourists who pick long-haul destinations might find they end up with a better-value holiday than those who remain closer to home, it has been suggested.

In its What the Pound Buys Abroad survey, Post Office Travel Services found that while the currency has slipped when compared to the euro, it has gained ground on some others.

According to the report, the holiday destinations where sterling stretches furthest are South Africa, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia and the USA.

Helen Warburton, Post Office head of travel, said: "Looking forward, we believe that holidaymakers will look very carefully this year at how to get the best value for their money."

She added that cost-conscious tourists should keep an eye on the price of transatlantic flights as the open skies agreement, which came into force this month, should make the sector more competitive.

Her remarks echo those of Christine Ourmieres, general manager of Air France-KLM in the UK and Ireland.

Last week, Miss Ourmieres told Radio 5 Live's Wake Up To Money that the open skies agreement will provide greater choice when travelling abroad.
