Travellers planning to visit Venice will be able to book tourism services online from February. It is hoped that the new system will help spread the concentration of visitors to Venice more evenly throughout the year.

The new website was introduced by Venice's deputy mayor, Michele Vianello, at a press conference in Rome, reports eturbonews.com. The new scheme offers advanced booking and could help visitors save money.

From February 1 tourists will be able to book council controlled services online. This includes parking, ferry trips and museum tickets. Travellers taking city breaks in Venice will also be able to access privately run services via the new website, such as restaurants and shops.

The site will feature a sustainability thermometer, which will inform visitors of the degree of crowding they can expect. A colour coded calendar will encourage people to book holidays in Venice out of peak season by offering discounts.

Vianello said of the new initiative: "In this way the city is preparing to welcome tourists in the best possible manner. On the one hand informing them about the sustainability of their visit and, on the other, allowing them to save money, which is no bad thing in difficult times like these."

Tickets booked online will have barcodes that holders can scan in at the attractions. Anyone booking via the site will not incur any extra charges and tourists will be guaranteed of accessing quality services.
