Myth and history combine in magical Greece
Myth and history combine in magical GreeceAnyone who wishes to experience the real Greece should "forget the islands" and visit the Peloponnese area on the mainland, it has been claimed.

Writing in the Sunday Times Travel Magazine, Dana Facaros explains that the region has a fascinating past, both in myth and reality.

The legendary figures of Pan, Hermes, Hercules and Pegasus all have links to the area, while the ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine civilizations have all left their mark on the countryside, she stated.

Ms Facaros said: "The Peloponnese offers so much you could easily spend a month here."

She added that the area is known as the garden of Greece and in spring "everything is luxuriant; even the cracks in the walls are filled with flowers".

The easiest way to visit the Peloponnese is by flying to Athens and then hiring a car, she concluded.

Last month, John Bevan of lastminute.com predicted that Greece is set to be a popular destination for UK tourists this summer as it offers "competitive prices".
