Mexico's government pledges millions to boost tourism
Mexico's government pledges millions to boost tourismMexico is to invest almost £6 million in its tourism industry in an attempt to attract more visitors to the country. Government cash is being ploughed into the Mexican tourism infrastructure and a further £2.5 million has been earmarked to help raise the country's national and international profile as a tourist destination, TravelDailyNews.com reveals

Rodolfo Elizondo Torres, Mexico's secretary of tourism, announced that £3.5 million was to be invested in various areas and projects, amounting to an increase of more than 50 per cent on spending in 2007. He summed up the government's intentions: "Our aim is to bring more visitors to our country and to accomplish this, we need to compete with other destinations. This will be achieved with training and investment."

Investment will be made in entertainment and leisure areas, such as the Zona Rosa; an eco-tourism project in the Tlahuac district of Mexico City; cultural initiatives; as well as in the country's business tourism. To boost Mexico's profile with business travellers, Elizondo Torres revealed that financial support would be given to the Mexico City Office for Congresses and Convention. He explained: "We want to attract more business-related travellers for conventions, fairs and exhibitions as we realise this is an important and growing segment. The reinvigoration of efforts to attract these visitors is a big step forward for Mexico."

Echoing Elizondo Torres's sentiments, Manuel Diaz Cebrian, director of the Mexico Tourism Board UK, Ireland, Sweden and The Netherlands, said: "Bringing together our efforts and investment is key to the country's continued sustainable development as a world class leisure and business destination. Our aim is to boost the profile of Mexico and we are certainly heading in the right direction."

The latest announcement comes after Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinijosa in April confirmed that the coastal town of Huatulco in the state of Oaxaca was to receive 54 million pesos (£2,577,386) to develop its status as a tourist destination.
