Manchester 'naked' x-ray scanner won't be used on children
Manchester Airport's 'naked' body scanner will not be used on children. Child protection experts voiced concerns over the new x-ray scanner, which is being trialled at the airport.
The airport had been warned that the RapiScan machine could create indecent images of children, reports The Times. As a result, Manchester Airport has decided passengers under the age of 18 will not be scanned in this way.
The scanner produces 'naked' images of those being scanned, showing up breast enlargements, piercings and genitals. Any passenger can opt out of using the RapiScan machine, but there were no restrictions on it being used on children.
However, a spokeswoman for the airport explained that the situation has now changed. "Experts in child protection have told us that this is a grey area," she said. "On this basis, if these experts tell us that there might be a problem then we'll work with them to establish a definitive position. In the meantime, no under 18s will participate in the trial."
The airport has assured passengers that all images are destroyed and anonymous. The new scanner will reveal any concealed weapons and does not pose a danger to those passing through it.
