Holiday industry urged to be more environmentally responsible
Companies involved in the tourism industry need to take responsibility for their impact on the environment, one industry body has claimed.According to Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents, firms and individuals operating in the holiday trade have to work to "reduce the negative impact on both the environment and the local community".
While it would be difficult to make some attractions such as theme parks green, there are still steps that everyone can take to be more eco-friendly, Ms Tuke explained.
"I think that everyone - for both cost and environmental reasons - will have to look at all of their aspects and the way that they work so that they can reduce their emissions as much as possible," she said.
Last month, Peter Lockley of the World Wide Fund for Nature urged holidaymakers to consider the ecological impact of any trips they take.
He said that as people will continue to take overseas holidays, they should try and take the most environmentally-friendly method of transport available.
