Network Rail is planning a high-speed rail line from London to Scotland. The line would cut the travel time for the journey to just over two hours.

Under the plans, tourists arriving in London would be able to travel to Edinburgh apartments in two hours and nine minutes. Those heading to Glasgow would be able to do so in two hours and 16 minutes.

The 200mph hour line would also enable those renting London apartments to take day trips to Manchester, with a journey time of one hour and six minutes. Birmingham would be just 46 minutes from central London, while Liverpool could be reached in one hour and 23 minutes.

Network Rail's chief executive, Ian Coucher, said that demand would soon exceed supply: "Demand for rail travel is growing and our main lines from the north to London are nearly full. By 2020 we will be turning away passengers...we need to start the planning now to meet future demand and the solution is a new high-speed line to the Midlands, the north west and Scotland."
