Green tourism 'now a must'
People "no longer have a choice" and must now make sure that they are taking environmentally responsible holidays, it has been claimed.Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Graham Boynton states that even people who have not thought about their impact on the world around them before must start to do so now.
He said: "We should think about why we are travelling, make efforts to stay longer in destinations when flying long-haul to make that journey more worthwhile and demand that the companies we travel with take steps to reduce the size of their footprint."
People who plan on taking their holidays closer to home should consider alternatives to flying in order to make their trips greener, Mr Boynton added.
Meanwhile, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation has announced that it is set to do more to support the industry in Africa.
The body believes that tourism is key to sustainable development in the area.
