Ferry service and direct flights tempt tourists to Samos
Greece has grand designs for its tourism industry and is planning to dramatically boost visitor numbers to its islands in the coming years. JustOverseas reports on how the country is setting the ball rolling by improving access to the island of Samos.
Overseas property agents Barrasford and Bird Worldwide claim that the
Greek government aims to increase tourism to the islands by an impressive 50 per cent by 2013 and is starting by opening up travel options to
Samos , one of the
Aegean Islands. The government hopes to encourage more holidaymakers to discover Samos and, with this in mind, a new direct ferry link from
Bodrum on mainland Turkey will transport visitors across the waters. For UK visitors wishing to bypass the mainland completely, there are direct flights to Samos from the UK - taking just three and a half hours.
As well as being a boon for tourists, the government initiative has been welcomed by professionals in the overseas property market. Robin Barrasford, managing director of Barasford and Bird Worldwide, explained why it was also good news for anyone thinking of investing in property on Samos: "The new ferry link from Bodrum will be a substantial boost to Samos's tourism market. Couple this with direct flights from the UK [and] Samos will undoubtedly see a huge increase in tourism and revenue from tourism in the coming years, making now an opportune time to purchase a property on the island."According to Barrasford and Bird Worldwide's website, the Bodrum to Samos ferry link will take its inaugural voyage this first week of May.
The drive in tourism looks set to get off to a flying start as it is estimated that the number of tourists to Samos should hit the 50,000 mark by 2009. The island remains relatively undiscovered and off the tourist trail, but those who are in on the secret are enchanted by its secluded coves, lush beaches, a maze of meandering streets and a rich cultural heritage.
