Cuba looks to lure golfers
Cuba is set to entice golfers to the island as it looks to expand its tourism appeal beyond beach holidays.Political objections to the sport have now been dropped and investors from Canada and Europe are preparing to start work on new courses across the island, Reuters reports.
Speaking to the news provider, Mark Entwistle, a former Canadian ambassador to Havana, said: "Golf is seen as important to develop a more sophisticated and repeat tourism beyond sun and sand."
Mr Entwistle, who is also an adviser on one of the projects, added that there are at least ten golf developments currently in the pipeline.
Antonio Zamora, a Miami-based lawyer and an expert on Cuban real estate, claimed that the country has to build new courses if it wants to compete with other resorts in
Mexico, the
Dominican Republic and
Jamaica.
Since being appointed president in February of this year, Raul Castro has introduced a number of reforms that many analysts believe are aimed at opening up the country to tourism and other forms of external investment.
