Cream-fields of green - festival takes on an eco-twist
One of the UK's established music festivals is thinking environmentally this year as it celebrates its 10th year in the business and lends its support to World Environment Day (June 5th). Creamfields has unveiled plans to get festival-goers not just limiting their green contribution to the colour of their wellies.
The dance festival, being held near
Liverpool, has announced several initiatives to reduce its environmental impact. Recycling bins will be placed all around the site and taps will be pump-powered to minimise water wastage. Traders will be doing their bit, using recycling and biodegradable bin bags, as well as serving hungry visitors food and drink in biodegradable containers. The festival's Residents' Bar will be run on a biomass generator and wind turbines. Furthermore, all waste will be sorted at the end of the festival and as much as possible will be recycled.
It is not just litter that may be left behind by music lovers; abandoned and donated tents will be given to charity at the close of events. The tents will then be sent to countries where they are needed to provide shelter. For those that prefer to camp in style, the luxury accommodation in the Boutique camping area will offer solar powered beach huts.
To ensure the emphasis remains on having fun, organisers are encouraging visitors to dress up in outfits made from recycled clothes. Old costumes can be placed in special containers, which will then be donated to Oxfam.
