A new ski resort is to be built in Bulgaria. The Mechi Chal resort will be built in Bulgaria's Rhodope Mountain area, close to the town of Chepelare .

Bulgaria's new ski resort will cost over €50m and will be built over the next five years in the Rhodope Mountain area, reports Sofia News Agency.

The Mechi Chal resort will transform the small mountain town of Chepelare into an international centre for winter sports holidays and mountain tourism. Construction will take part in three phases, the first of which will be finished by the end of 2008.

The first phase includes the renovation of an existing ski-lift, the construction of a new 2.7km lift and a new 3.5km ski track. The second phase is expected to be constructed in 2009-11 and will create a sports centre in Chepelare and another lift. The third phase includes the opening of summer tourism facilities and a resort village.

On Saturday the first sod of the new resort will be turned during a formal ceremony. This will be attended by Bulgaria's deputy prime minister and other officials.
