Blackstone Valley, USA is the top eco-destination
The winners of the 2008 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards have been announced.Organised by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the awards recognise success in the arena of sustainable tourism.
The top sustainable destination was named as Blackstone Valley, in the
USA.
Located in the state of Rhode Island, the valley is considered to be the birth place of the American industrial revolution and, according to the region's tourism body, it is "rich in culture, history and recreational activities".
The Conservation Award went to Ecotourism Australia, for their work in supporting sustainable tourism in the country.
Commenting on the honours Jeff Clarke, a member of the WTTC's executive committee said: "With growing climate concerns, delivering sustainable travel has emerged as an important responsibility for our industry.
"As travellers' awareness of their impact on the environment increases, we face a formidable challenge in providing environmentally-conscious services and at the same time, promoting the importance of tourism to economic development."
Earlier this week, a number of air transport organisations signed a document which committed them to tackling the issue of climate change.
