A quieter side to the Mediterranean
Anyone looking to sample the Mediterranean without having to put up with the crowds might want to head off the beaten track and discover a different side to the area.Writing for the Observer, Jill Crawshaw praises the region of Zagori located in the north-west of
Greece.
Bordering Albania and Macedonia, the region has some of the most diverse wildlife in
Europe and is also packed full of "fairytale villages", Ms Crawshaw explains.
She said: "Now new roads are opening the villages up to low-key tourism based on walking and climbing, rafting, kayaking and bird-watching."
The fact that the majority of the region is designated as a national park means that development is tightly controlled, so the area's natural beauty is unlikely to be spoiled, she concluded.
Last week, a study by TripAdvisor found that 46 per cent of people in the UK are planning to take advantage of the May bank holidays by going on some sort of getaway.
