World's first indoor winter sports complex coming to UK
Work on the world's first indoor winter sports resort is set to commence following official approval. Located in Suffolk's Great Blakenham, SnOasis informs keen skiers and snowboarders on its website that the British government has given the project the go-ahead.
Costing an estimated £350 million and covering 350 acres, upon completion the family-themed development will offer visitors a wide variety of recreational activities, encompassing 14 types of winter sports disciplines as well as an "extensive array" of other activities.
As well as catering for the public, the complex will also become a winter sports centre of excellence, providing athletes with world-class facilities in which to train, SnOasis claims.
Godfrey Spanner, managing director of Onslow Suffolk, the scheme's developer commented: "We have been working on this project for six years, with costs running into many millions. At last, SnOasis will become a reality to the benefit of Ipswich,
Suffolk,
East Anglia, the country and, of course, all of our hopes for greater success at major winter sports competitions."
The focus of the site will be the world's largest indoor ski slope, just under half a kilometre in length and with a vertical drop of 100 metres.
Wider scheme developments include plans for the construction of over 400 new homes on an adjacent site, road improvements, the development of a nature reserve and the planting of over 100,000 trees.
As Spanner concluded: "It's now time to move forward...we will now be able to hold major international winter sports events in the UK, many for the first time. Also, we will give the four million winter sports enthusiasts, our athletes and the ski industry in general a truly national focus."
