Tenerife possible UN World Heritage site
A site in the centre of popular holiday destination Tenerife has been nominated for inclusion on the UN World Heritage List. The Teide National Park has been put forward by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) for its "mature, slow-moving and geologically complex volcanic system" and could play a key role in further promoting the various attractions that the region has to offer holidaymakers.
The UN will now consider the site along a number of others and consider whether the area should be legally protected in order to ensure it is not overdeveloped or eroded.
At the centre of the park is an enormous volcano crater which is 48 kilometres in circumference and is a keen attraction for visitors and walkers who are also interested in the surrounding wildlife and plants.
The growing number of low-cost flights to the island has helped to boost tourist numbers in recent years, especially as more people discover the traditional atmosphere of the region and its stunning beaches.
