Taxi troubles lead to Prescott delaying easyJet flight
Politician John Prescott caused a few eyebrows to be raised recently when his late arrival at the airport led to his flight being delayed, reveals The Telegraph.
The former deputy prime minister was flying back from
Paphos in
Cyprus after addressing the Institute for Travel and Tourism. However, following a mix up with a taxi driver, he arrived at the airport only 15 minutes before his easyJet flight was due to take off. The gate had already been closed and only a direct appeal from the president of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, persuaded the airline to let Prescott through.
"John had left his hotel in good time and jumped into a cab but there was, not for the first time in his life, a breakdown in communication," explained a source. "The driver had thought John wanted to go to
Larnaca airport, rather than Paphos, and it was only when they had been on the road for half an hour that John realised something was wrong as he was told it would only take 10 minutes."
Staff at the easyJet desk were reluctant to let Prescott board. The politican contacted the Institute, who then got in touch with Christofias. The president in turn told the carrier to delay take-off, allowing Prescott to take his seat and return to
England for the Commons vote on counter-terrorism.
