Palin set to inspire travel to eastern Europe
Michael Palin's new series is expected to inspire Brits to travel into relatively unkown areas in eastern Europe. The series, entitled Michael Palin's New Europe, begins on BBC Two on September 16th and will run for seven weeks.
In it Palin investigates how the fall of Communism in Europe has transformed countries such as
Bosnia, Albania, Macedonia and
Romania.
He said: "We have much more in common than what has set us apart. It's a bit like discovering a long-lost branch of your family. We shall doubtless still quarrel as families do, but at least we can get together for a party every now and then."
He added that countries in eastern Europe that have joined the EU have gained a new confidence, a sign that they are "once again being taken seriously as European players".
Palin's televised exploits in the Himalayas gained him widespread popularity three years ago.
