Dr Gillian McKeith – star of You Are What You Eat – has said that the nutritious meals people eat while abroad render holidaymakers healthier and more svelte than they were when they stepped onto the plane.

The rest and relaxation holidaymakers get while abroad is known to contribute to their health and well-being. However, a joint study between Dr McKeith and Thomas Cook found that Britons are benefitting from foreign cuisine while abroad.

The stereotypical image of the chip-eating, beer-swigging British holidaymaker has been thrown out, with today's tourists eager to get a taste of some foreign dishes.

Some 87 percent of respondents to a Thomas Cook survey said that they prefer trying new food overseas than sticking to their usual diets. And, with foreign cuisine often more nutritious than the UK's, Britons are returning healthier.

"If you've come back from holiday feeling relaxed, rested and a few pounds lighter, try to think about the reasons why," Dr McKeith said.

"As well as getting lots of sleep and sunshine you were probably much more active on holiday than you normally are.

"And you may have eaten more fresh, unprocessed foods without even realising it. Don't go back to your old habits; keep the holiday feeling alive."
